Engine management warning light by the sounds of it.
You need to get it scanned for codes , any loss of power ?

Imminent engine failure probably or whatever the manual states...
If its on only at ignition then its probably fine (as long as it goes off).
If its stays on, then I would run away very quickly as there have been at least 8 engine fires world wide. Considering the D3 is not that popular, this is a great cause for concern in hot climates. Here less of an issue of course, as its so cold outside, engine parts will shatter far faster and explosive forces generated by the failing engine will be greatly reduced.
PS. Hard hat and high vis jacket is recommended at roadside, or in kitchen whilst awaiting rescue from burley LR mechanic.

Many thanks fellers. No, there is no loss of power and yes the light does stay on after ignition.
I'll take it out and get it connected for error codes. Was just worried about how far i should take it. Garage is about 25 miles away.
Blimey Simon! Good job i'm not of a nervous disposition!! Should I also be wearing a flack jacket!
Only asking for advice because I have left owners manual in Somerset after recent trip. I had no idea what symbol meant.
Thanks again.

As long as it stays orange, then you should be fine for 25 miles. The advice is to seek qualified assistance as soon as possible. If it goes red, then you should stop the engine immediately. If, howeve, it goes red and starts flashing red, then Simon the has a point about beating a hasty retreat - especially if the stereo mysteriously starts playing funerial musak.

Engine Management System (EMS) fault
Illuminates amber in the instrument pack when the engine management system registers a serious fault -
reduced performance may be experienced. Avoid high speeds and consult your Land Rover Dealer/Authorised Repairer as soon as possible.
Verify if you have hesitation when accelerating (especially gently) at around 2,000 revs....if yes, welcome to the EGR club...The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeksnearly 4 weeksover 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

Thanks for all the further advice. The garage did mension that it is most commonly a sticking EGR valve?? I have got the vehicle booked in tomorrow morning for a diagnostic check. fingers crossed it is nothing serious. Will let all who are interested know the outcome.
Cheers!

Well, indeed the garage did confirm that the EGR valve (they don't know which one) is causing problems. They cleared the fault down with the AutoLogic pc and advised that I keep an eye on it to see what happens, if anything. The light came back on later that day! After contacting them to inform them of this, I asked the question "when the fault light comes on, is it a latching event or can the fault clear by itself?" I was told that it was definately a latching the fault. Then the next day the fault cleared by itself??? Bit confused now!
Anyway, it has since come back on and off several times.
I'm going to book the vehicle in to get the EGR valves replaced as still under waranty.
