I adapted an old standard hatchback Paddy Hopkirk type rack for mine.
Had this on a previous saloon, Hatchback and now D3.
Rack is 4 x suckered onto glass
2 securing straps over the top.
1 x each side of glass.
1 x bottom of upper tailgate.
Rack is secure cabled on to tailgate.
Bike is secure cabled on to rack.
All strapped up and everything is a solid as a rock.
Lights and plate not really obscured.
BUT, wouldn't use it with an Iron horse of a bike, or multiple bikes.
Mine is only 27lb weight - but would certainly take two of that weight.

My Thurle one bolts on the same way as in Neils pic, and is for 2 bikes, it also has a quick release screw on either side allowing it to lean forward it order for the top door to open, hard to see by the pics of mine n Neils, but they do

365 days on a count down, on start up it shows you when you reach the last month by counting down the days. It is recommended NOT to overshoot the days and/or the mileage

How many bikes...? Wouldn't go near the tailgate hanging racks for more than one or two - not just solidity of the rack, but the difficulty of hanging the bikes securely so they don't bounce around and scratch the paint... Then you need a trailer board anyway as the number plates and lights will be masked, so you may as well just get a towball mounted rack...
I have the older version of this Tradekar 4 bike carrier and it's very solid. I was a bit dubious till I found I could jump up and down on the back edge without it moving, and this update looks to address my minor usability concerns. Certainly no problem with four full size bikes over Xmas, either on local runs or the 200 miles each way
I bought a Thule tow bar 3 bike carrier and I can highly recommend it.
First test was Chorley to South Cornwall loaded with 3 bikes and no problem at all

I use the standard LR tow hitch receiver, and use a Yakima Hold up bike tray. I did have to buy an 8" extender however because the way the LR receiver is positioned the inner most bike's handlebar would bang against the rear window. so had to order that. Also noticed that the yakima pin wasnt long enough to protrude beyond the body of the receiver to put on the safety clip on

foofighter - I like your approach. Have you considered getting a fabricator to extend / make you a longer pin ?

one question on the THule stuff (and the others that fit on the tow hitch) will they fit on the standard removable tow bar, or are they just for the perm fix one ?

me too. Fastens onto the tow ball and feels very solid. I needed to move a pretty heavy 5 burner BBQ a short distance and used the rack (massively overloaded but only a short distance and off public highway) and it stood up to it.
Best of all is the ease of attaching it, ease of securing the bikes (and they lock to the rack) and then the ease of pushing a button and bar and then the bikes and rack slide away from the car so you can open the upper and lower tailgates in seconds.
Def look at this one. It also folds up and easily goes in theboot.
