New Disco discount

Guys

Mate of mines son works for Land Rover and told me yesterday that his son can have cars at 25% discount off list for family and friends. A max of 2 a year. He is going to bring me a price list in next week.

Does this sound about right for the discount because I got a Shocked on.

Cheers Paul

Wonder if they will get taxed on the discount as a benefit in kind Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter , as that sounds as if LR are selling to staff below cost? Shocked

I believe.... from a former colleague who used to work for JLR

its not a benefit in kind unless it costs the company any money. So they are not taxed.

Its the same for their company car scheme, they do not pay BIK, they pay a monthly admin fee to cover insurance and admin costs, the company sell the cars to the company car scheme at cost, they then sell them at 6~9 months old to trade (normally the nearly new stock at dealers), the selling price is the same as what they paid so no cost to the company therefore no benefit in kind.

Its the same reason why staff at the airlines get cheap airline tickets without BIK, they are all standby tickets, so as long as there is no net cost to the company no BIK.....

unless anyone tells me otherwise thats what i think......

The "cost" of a D4 to LR is probably a good bit less than 50% of its normal selling price. That is before allocation of a share of the depreciation of the machinery usewd to build it and design costs etc.

Not true. BIK is due of the employee if they have received "a benefit in kind..." from their employer. If a benefit is deemed to be provided in lieu of salary, then the employee has to pay an appropriate amount of tax. There are some notable exceptions to this rule that most company Directors and their accountants take advantage of - but a car is not one of them!

Depending on the benefit provided to the employee, then the employer pays additional National Insurance Contributions (NICs). Benefits are a right nightmare. It's all available on the HMRC website - if you know where to look!

When I reach 65 I can start getting discount on Ford and associated group cars again..... but until I become a Ford pensioner no beans. Was gutted when they sold LR Big Cry

Usually only possible to gift the discount to immediate family, and checks ARE done (or used to be). Not to say things weren't sometimes done behind the scenes. Whistle
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Buying a car from your employer at a discount is not a B.I.K. so long as the discount does not exceed the cost of producing the car.

When my employer was owned by General Motors we used to receive Vauxhall company cars straight out of the factory - we kept them 10 months/10000 miles and then they went back and ended up at Network Q - Company Car Tax applied - though you could buy the car from Vauxhall for the same price that Network Q paid for them - so generally a 50% saving on new after 10 months was pretty good
