Tow Hitch Receiver Capacity |
|
I have the factory receiver KNB500080. My trailer is within the recommended 7700 lbs for the truck and receiver. Problem is the tongue weight is in the 800 to 900 lbs range and the receiver only rated at 550 lbs (300 lbs under rated). Any options or suggestions so I can tow my tongue heavy trailer?
I appreciate any feedback.
Ryan
This robust Tow Hitch Receiver delivers a 7,716-lb. trailer
load capacity and a tongue weight capacity of 550 lbs. The
receiver easily detaches from your LR3 and is lockable for
security.

Our towing terminology is different over here so there might be a language barrier or two in here! First of all is your trailer a 'dead weight' or a load stabilising and how many axles does it have?
The load applied to the tongue can be adjusted by using a different drop on your coupling so you may be able to balance the needs of your trailer (tongue weight of 10% or so) with the stated capabilities of your tow vehicle (7%) simply by changing the coupler - this has a huge effect on a single axle trailer, but less so as the axle count increases.
The limitation on the vehicle will be the rear axle load as the receiver is likely to be massively over-engineered. Your quoted tongueweight of 550lbs already uses an 'extended' tongueweight value. The standard noseweight rating in Europe is 150kg (330lbs), only 250kg (550lb) if the internal load is reduced to compensate
PS What's a 'truck'? I thought you had an LR3.
