ROUGE TRADERS
Question: What is the difference between a particular Landrover Dealer and the individuals exposed in BBC'S ROGUE TRADERS.....bbc tonight....
Answer : Nothing as far as I'm concerned.
The scene...... the DISCO3 goes in for a service ........its highlighted to wife on the phone that while its there its DISCOVERED that the brake pads are worn and disks are at minimum thickness, therefore they advise it will cost £170 for pads and £270 for disks to be replaced ~~£440 , and not only that but a brake light is out which they will replace for £26 (but fitting is for free), and the wipers are worn which they will replace for £46.
Being a born sceptic, and 28 years as a maintenance engineer(although not in landrovers) with equipment that costs on average £1.8million a piece, I advised that it was okay and I would fix the problems.
Got the 4x4 back and ckecked out the situation.
TRUE the rear brake pads were 2-3 mm
FALSE the rear disks were only worn by 0.6 mm (checked with dial caliper , so not so bad that it necessitated replacing them, (the car only done 30 000 miles.)
FALSE :the brake light was not out. But a little research reveals I can buy the dual filament bulb for £2.30 and it only takes 15 minutes to replace it in in the tail light assembly (2 screws remove and pull off the plastic posts) -- if I needed to replace it.........
FALSE the wipers once cleaned were visibly okay along the full length, and wiped the window without smearing.
Can buy 22 inch replacement wipers at costco (goodyear guaranteed no squeal) £6.30 a blade.
And To replace the rear pads without disks was £90 at local independant who confirmed disks were worth another 25 000 plus miles.. a great deal since it would cost me £30 to £60 for pads.
So £512 bill reduces to £90, and Ive bought bulb and wiper blades for future replacement for about £15 more.
Has anyone contacted trading standards about these thourghly disgraceful practices of Dealers escalating costs to make a profit at our expense.............I assume that complaining to Landrover will fall on deaf ears as they will be sympathetic to their dealers maximising their service profit to maintain their flashy showrooms......
there, that feels better Ive got that off my chest.........

Same thing happened to me a few times.
I paid to have my brake fluid changed on my defender. When I got home I thought id check and couldn't get the cap of the clutch. I checked the brakes they were covered in mud. I got my money back on that one.
I was advised the brakes were nearly worn out, (this is on my defender) They quoted me loads to change them, so I thought I would do it myself. I brought some new pads at a discount from duckworths. I took the wheels off to find the pads hardly worn. The defender lasted another 20k on those same pads.
I had mine 4 wheel aligned at the same dealer at a cost of £220, I took it back three times before they got it right. I have had it done since at another garage for £60, they got it bang on first time.
I cant be bothered with main dealers anymore. Their prices are crazy and the work is terriable. I am ok cos I change my car alot, I feel sorry for the people who will have these cars in five and ten years time.

I'm so sorry it ROGUE Traders............cant frickin spell...........thats me off my high horse...........LOL
I'll tell you after a certain date ....... I might need to use the .......
The disc pad replacement seems a fairly standard one, was once told mine needed replaced at a service, only they had forgotten that they'd just replaced discs & pads 3 mths before when it was in for warranty repairs
Have also sat in a dealer's reception waiting for car to be completed and listened to calls to other customers - every 3rd one seemed to be "your brake pads need replacing" - but perhaps they're just being helpful and projecting the wear rate based on annual service visits
Only way it's likely to stop is if a majority of customers immediately report the dealers involved to Trading Standards - once the DP finds he is getting frequent visits and the whole of his business is under the spotlight, they'll soon see sense!
