D4 Halogen to HID conversion.
Today amongst other things i set on and did a HID conversion to the D4 halogen head light.
I used a H7 6000K HID kit for a start project because i had some in stock and also wanted to compare to my wifes D3 the colour difference. As seen on the forum posts by buellbeast with his spot light conversion and now i can see for my self if you want as close a match to the factory xenons you NEED the 5000k HID kit.
The 6000K has a very very slight tinge of blue to the colour compared to the factory D3 xemons but its still a very nice look and makes a massive difference to the lighting capeabilitys of the car compared to the halogens so is still a worthwhile conversion even on the 6000k colour range.
Here is a picture of the connections made inside the light unit its self all plug and play and a peice of cake to do, I drilled the backing cover to allow the wires to come through and they are cheap to repace if i remove the kit.
Below is a picture of the ballast unit attached to the under side of the head lamp in the original place it would be if fitted at the factory. If i had the choice i would but the MINI ballast kit it would fit a lot better.
same again but a different angle picture.
Here is the HID kit fully installed into the light unit ready to go back in the car.
TAKE NOTE when fitting the passanger side light back in because the wires are close to the Fuel Burning Heater exhaust. Make sure you have good clearance after fitting you dont want a fire form a shorted wire.
This picture below is to prove that fitting a HID kit DOES NOT cause errors in the cars modules, picture of IDS/SDD dealer tool diagnostics
Picture outside in the dark, not very good its hard to get a good picture because they are to bright.
Before and after head lights, the brightness difference is more obvious in real life the picture does not do it justice.
Here is the kit type i fitted
Hope it helps, get cracking with yours, have fun
Pete

I would order some with mini ballasts if people want them, but if not Ebay is probabaly the cheapest place ive found so far for both normal ballast type and the mini ones.
I would order some mini ones but they are quite a bit more expencive than the large ballast version so i dont want to order some and get stuck with them.

Is this a suitable conversion for the D3 or do you need the projector style lights of the D4?
I dont see why it cant be done on a halogen D3, jusd buy a reflector kit rarther than a projector kit.

Pete,
Is this just changing the normal beam? does yours use a different light for main beam? Can that be HID converted too?
Just thinking of doing the Mrs Zafira as the price of these kits have dropped dramatically.
Yes this is the dip beam ive done and yes it uses a different light for the main beam which is a reflector type, i will be fitting a kit in there also soon
Im waiting for the mini balllast kit to arrive.
Think the levelling is done by the air suspension on the 'fixed' headlight systems don't know about the adaptive's, but then if you have adaptive's you won't need this kit!!

I fitted a simalar kit to my D3 i had problems with one head light not always coming on then found out i needed these can adaptor boxes and everything seemed ok yesterday it done it again but then today has worked ok.
I have swapped all the components side to side to try and diag the faulty component which pointed to the bulb so i bought a pair of replacements but they do the same? The weird thing is if i put the bulb out of the light that dosnt always come on in the other light it then makes that light play up but ive put 2 replacement bulbs in?
anyone else had simalar problems, im wondering if the kit i got of e bay is a bit cheap and rubbish
