Disco 4 - 2.7L or 3.0L

Hi there,

Have ordered a Disco 4 2.7L, and just doing a little reading while I'm waiting for it. I'm having difficulty finding info from owners of the 2.7L as opposed to the 3.0L. 3.0L owners seem to love it.

I've never owned a LR before, and will be using it mainly for city driving, and offroading once in a while. Thought that the Disco 4 2.7L would be plenty for me, and not keen on putting out the extra $12,000 for the 3.0L.

Will I love the 2.7L as much as they love the 3.0L?

Thanks

2.7 D4

Had a 2.7 D4 on loan the last couple of days while my V8 Diesel Sport was being serviced. You will not be disappointed by the power available, it has plenty of go.Also interior is very nice compared with D3. I also have a D3 2.7, it's no tyre smoker but I have never found it wanting. I have towed well over 3 ton with it and the boat owner commented that it went alot better than a 4.2td Lancruiser that had also towed the boat.

Hi there fellow Sydneysider,
Yes, you should be happy with the 2.7. I'm just about to take delivery of a D4 with the 3.0 - I currently have a D3 2.7 HSE. Most of the time I never found the 2.7 to be lacking. To be honest, I almost bought a 2.7 D4 myself - I only went for a 3.0 when I found a good deal on a demonstrator.

As mentioned, a remapping will give you about the same power and torque as the 3Ltr and only cost about $900
Thats 11 grand to spend on other toys for the D4 Very Happy

Recently upgraded from D3 2.7 to the D4 with the 3 Liter - and the difference is remarkable. However it's more a FUN thing, not a NEED thing. The D3 2.7 had plenty of power - in fact shortly before picking up the D4 I was still wondering if the 3 litre was worth it. Funwise it is - and in regards to overtaking it is a big improvement. But I never had problems before with the 2.7.
However I wanted Xenon Lights - and by the time I added Xenon to the 2.7 D4 I was getting pretty close to the 3 litre price - and with the government rebate for new cars it was too tempting ...

It could, and you should be fully aware of the consequences if you go down the mapping route.

While I find 2.7 manual D3 plenty powerful enough, and 2.7 GS D4 has advantage of 18" wheels, in UK list price difference between 2.7GS manual and 3.0GS auto is only £2.4K - difference between 2.7auto and 3.0 auto is less than £1K!. Bear in mind you will pay a bit more VED for 2.7 auto (CO2 is 244 gm/cm for 2.7 manual, 270 for 2.7 auto and 244 for 3.0 auto) and I can only conclude that JLR doesn't really want to sell many 2.7s. How come such a big price diffrence in OZ though?. However 2.7 makes sense in North Africa (looking at LR Middle East web site) because 18" wheels much better to deflate for sand. Oh when will someone find a way of putting 18" wheels on 3.0!!???

In Oz, we have a so-called Luxury Car Tax (LCT) which is 50% of the cost greater than where the 2.7 D4 sits (more or less). Perversely this means that it costs a lot less to have accessories added on the day after delivery, as post-delivery purchases aren't subject to the tax, but if it's delivered with an accessory the 50% tax is added on. I suspect that once something hits the LCT threshold, then the market accepts that they're buying luxury and willing to pay a bundle for it. This is codswallup by my way of thinking but we're stuck with it. I guess it is offset by the less expensive fuel. Also, as of about a year ago, the gov't decreed that all prices of everything have to be "all up" prices. They have to include all taxes, initial registration, inspections, etc. It gets tricky as each state has significantly different sales taxes on purchases of motor vehicles, and it's different for private purchasers vs businesses, so in effect there isn't any nationally broadcast prices. No prices are available on the internet for the same reasons. Individual purchasers have to go to each dealership and get a paper copy of the specific price for whatever vehicle is being pondered. Perversely this means that dealers are in a much better bargaining position than are purchasers, as the customer can't possibly stop by every dealership to see what prices they have on offer.

We also have to have the DPF, despite having 2 million people in a state the size of Western Europe - not much vehicle emissions to worry about here compared to the emissions from kangaroo dung.

Just out of interest note you have 19" wheels. Can't remember whether much sand as opposed to rock desert in Austalia, but how do those that do off road manage with big wheels and low profile tyres?

The PDF was only on the early 3.0 builds and not specifically for Oz, its just that we got caught-up in the EU5 qualification process. My vehicle had to be re-ordered because it was initially built with a DPF and I ordered a vehicle without one because I really didn't want it.

LCT is generally 33% not 50%. Its 25% for high clearance 4wds for primary producers.

we bought a 2.7 and love it. had a 3.0 for two weeks as a loan car wich was fantastic. definatley more obvious power. howver like previously mentioned, can be viewed as more of a fun thing than a necessity for on road driving. was uncertain how i would feel going back to the 2.7, but there really is a great amount of power in it. only difference i recognise in daily driving is that it may knock back a lower gear on a hill when the 3.0 would power on in the same gear. i did notice the more luxurious leather in the 3.0 was more comfortable and so to was the steering wheel. not sure if it was just me, but i am certain the 3.0 steering wheel was softer and therefore more comfotable than the harder 2.7. mate overall, happy with the car and the power. love it!

I managed badly with 19" original tyres. Got stuck in sand often and slices most of them up on rock (in Western Aust we may have 18,000 km of beaches Mr. Green but lots of very sharp iron-ore rocks). Solution was the very expensive MTR. They work better in sand than they should and if pressures managed thoughtfully (not too little, nor too much) they're good on rock. When my D3 was stolen, it happened to have on 18" Cooper HT+ tyres, the MTRs were safely in the garage and so will feature on the D4 when it arrives eventually.
