My insurer Direct Line want to charge a 10% surcharge plus up the excess by £200 for having the above fitted Is this the norm or are they having a laugh

I'd say they were definitely having a larrff, when I told the NFU that I'd added a few bits (including a Superchip, winch bumper, suspension lift etc etc) to my Defender they just said that's OK, no problems, no change to the premium.
Needless to say they still have my business and are still significantly cheaper than any other insurer I've had a quote from, also very good at paying out on a recent claim too. Clive

Could very well see the exclusion of ALL A Bars eventually, but that will be on new vehicles as they cannot ban them on vehicles that meet the regulations NOW.
As for Direct Line charging a premium to have a A Bar fitted, I would question that or move over to their sister company who I am with, and it's no extra with Privilage

Can be an issue if you are part way through a year as they have you by the danglies; the cancellation fees and loss of the time towards your next years NCB means you are unlikely to chop and change part way through the year

Perhaps direct them to the manufacturers' web sites, and their claim:

The addition of an Endura Frontal protection system to your SUV could make your vehicle up to 50 times safer* for the pedestrian.
And my insurer has a bigger excess if I don't fit a pedstrian unfriendly steel bar on the front, due to the hazards from roos, emus, and camels.Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.
