I copied some files across from the "iTunes Music" folder of my computer onto a USB
Unfortunately it comes up with "Device Error" when I try to play in my D4.
Have I done the wrong thing or do I need to format the USB differently (currently formated to FAT)?

I don't remember formatting the drive at all. I simply copied some stuff over and of it went. Make sure, though, that the files are MP3 files - that seems to be what works best.

Doesn't Apfel have some weird file format? A straight iTunes copy and paste job is probably not going to work, as the LR system won't play iTunes files directly. It claims to play a variety of file types that it simply doesn't, by the by, but MP3 works fine. I had blood running out of my ears in Burrington Coombe this morning listening to the Killers at full chat........

MP4.....that'll be the problem. No doubt an iTunes expertition will be along momentarily, but I thought iTunes allowed conversion to MP3....unless it is rights protected. If that is the case, why don't you just plug in your iPod?

Just been messing about with this (small daughter seems to think my old ipod would be better in her sticky mitts than in my car...)
- 1GB USB stick, Fat32 formatted: plays MP3s just fine
- 1GB USB stick, NTFS formatted: nope
- Old 40GB USB disk: click, click (not enough power from USB port for it)
- more recent 160GB USB Disk, exFat formatted: not recognised
So looks like fat/fat32 required (willl try to find a machine old enough to re-format the 160GB disk!)
To OP, MP4 is normally a video format, which won't help... Standard iTunes files (downloaded or ripped from CD) are AAC which can use DRM (digital "rights" management) so may not play even if device supports AAC, e.g. another iTunes library. You want to make sure iTunes is set to rip to MP3 instead. (WAV works too, but is often uncompressed, and you don't want that...)

And for the sake of completeness, I have tried WMA files, and they don't appear to play despite LR's suggestion to the contrary.
I guess my 16gb stick is FAT32 formatted, but cannot check as it is in the car and I am not.

Neigbours must think I'm batty, been in and out all evening trying different things... Now fast coming to the conclusion that it doesn't support USB disks, since it can read a 1GB FAT32 stick but not 32 or 16GB FAT32 partitions on a USB disk (I suppose I should set up a 1GB partition, but by then it's so small as to be pointless!)
Chap at work has a 32GB stick - I'll see what it makes of that sometime (though I'll probably have to reformat it as part of the experiment  )

If this helps (or maybe causes more confusion), I got my D4 on saturday. Turned up to collect with a 4Gb USB preloaded with tunes that I had loaded in MP3 from Windows Media Player (read on here before that this was the way to do it). worked fine on the forecourt but as soon as I was on my way home kept getting 'Device Error please connect USB' message. kept putting it in and out, sometimes it would work but generally not. As an experiment I tried putting a small amount of the same tunes by the same method on a 1GB older usb stick and it works perfectly everytime - so far. I have therefore come to the conclusion that the stick is at fault even though it works perfectly in the PC. Now waiting for new stick to try again as 1Gb is not quite enough.

I am no iTunes expert and going from memory here...
Under the Preferences, something like Recording Preferences, there you can set the format between AAC (default) & MP3 (amongst others). If you set this to MP3 and go back to your library in the main window, you can then highlight the songs you want converted, right click it, and select "Convert to MP3".
The problem I find with this is that there are then 2 copies of the song in the library (one for each format). Also if you are the type to want your whole collection in 1 format and have ripped everything in the past using the default, then you'll need to change the settings each time.
The advantage with using another program is that it won't list twice, and you can delete all the MP3 versions once copied. Suzuki Vitara 3dr

OK people!
So here's what I did (in a slightly Luddite fashion). Take relevant songs from iTunes and copy them into a newly created folder.
Create another new folder
Use the converter (see post above) to convert MP4a songs to MP3 and drop them into the second new folder
Take the newly created MP3 files and move them to the USB drive
Ta da! Songs that can be played via the USB in the car!
I'm sure it can all be achieved more elegantly but - it works
Just in time for the new iPod cable to arrive!
