Rebooted and seems 80% ok, looks like I won't be buying SWMBO an iPhone 4, she'd love this one.

the annoy ing iphone pause
I found on my 3G that the issue was being caused by some of the apps installed, I deleted the apps and the annoying pauses went almost completely, however, I have also upgraded to the 4 since! (Apple sent my new free bumper yesterday, so hopefully no more signal issues!!)Must stop buying shiny toys....

Snap
if you dont need the 3g much the iphone 4 sim works, just change the apn settings and hey presto!
Bluetooth keyboard is a great toy to add if you do lots of typing (and you dont have to keep taking it out of its case to use it )
