I asked this in another post (about leather seats) and a few people said that the ONLY version with armrests is the HSE. This is a bit disappointing because had one of the first D3 SEs when they came out and it had armrests, as does my current HSE.
I also tested a new HSE (with armrests) and the salesman said only the new HSE had them. It's a pity because I think they're a necessity - not really a luxury.
Mind you - this could all be incorrect! My experience so far is that dealers don't really understand the fine detail of the different model specs, and the brochure is a bit vague on detail.

The dealer was right. Only the HSE has armrests. I think Land Rover have this wrong........

Yes - Land Rover have got it wrong.
As a D3 SE owner moving to a D4 XS with manual seats and no arm rests seems to be a retrograde step. It is difficulty justifying the extra £7200 for a HSE so it looks like I will be staying with the D3 SE for a while longer.
It was the leather seats that made me select the D3 SE in the first place.

Made me go from an XS I was about to buy to a HSE. Wouldn't touch a Disco without arm rests. Not good that the 4 nly has them on the HSE. Bit stupid.

I'd buy the HSE anyway, but I agree, LR have it wrong. The arm rest is an important eronomic advantage across the range. It's not a question of competition between trim-levels within the range. It's a key appeal of the LR vs other marques.

I was thinking about this again late last night and I have the option to replace my car in about 18 months time and as much as I like the D4, if budget only permitted a 2nd hand D3 HSE or a new D4 XS I would definitely go for the D3.
A while back had my car down in Yeovil for a service and had an XS for the day on loan. First time I had drive a D3 without arm rests and I didn't like it. What's the point in an auto if you can't rest your arm

All this "I'll only buy one if it has armrests" is a bit odd. Seems a funny thing to rule out buying a Land Rover product for.
Don't you use the central cubby box as one ? That's what I do in our current armrestless D3 S.

Think its a height thing. I'm 5ft 11in and need the arm rest, the wife is 5ft 3 and the arm rests don't bother her.

LR has hacked a load of people off by deleting the SE and pricing the XS as an SE. The armrests are really useful IMHO, especially for my wife on B roads (when I'm driving).
Having got my mind round the lack of availablity of a manual D4 3.0, I've tried to talk myself into an HSE but can't. HSE is too expensive, XS is too poorly equipped as I see it.
I will keep my D3 another two years and hope that the 2012MY (or 2011?) corrects some of the trim anomalies.
PS Given that the D4 looks so like the D3, I don't understand how LR can take it upmarket. Don't need to either - its just right as a £30-40k car. 2014MY Discovery
