Lower control arm

The front suspension of my car is noisy.According to my dealer the bushes of the lower control arm are shot.My car has only done 83800 odd km's.The car has had a relative easy life up to now.Is this normal? Will shot bushes effect the wheel alignment? If this is the normal lifespan of the bushes, can one replace them with poly bushes? If this is normal for a car that has been used mainly on good roads, what will happen when one uses the D3 offroad? In two weeks time I am off to Richtersveld and Nam.

Front lower arm bushes do go prematurely, it's one of the discovery features I'm afraid. I personally wouldn't use poly bushes. The bushes at the rear of the arms are oil filled and act like dampers. I replaced my bushes by pressing the old ones out but I would not recommend it as it is a pig of a job, new complete arms is the best way to go.

My bushes have been replaced twice already and I currently have 109,000km. Most dealers will now have stock of complete units for swopout, so it's not a job that will take more than a couple of hours.
I think you should get it done before you go Offroad - you will appreciate the difference on the corrugations and bumps

Remember it is a heavy car, I used to replace bushes on my defender every 40 000 km

Thanks for the replies.Baben,my control arms will bereplaced before my trip...the last of my MP.I read on the forum that the anti roll bar bushes can be noisy as well? Can the stealer confuse the two? They rocked the car from side to side and decleared the control arm bushes as the source of noise.
The fact that one of the bushes is oilfilled explains the relative short life....from experiance on my car that have oil filled engine mountings, they work well but don't last!!!

Up the BULLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your dealer is OK with it, then go thru the vehicle with one of their techies to ensure you get everything sorted. If you just let them replace what they want, then you run the risk that a little issue might be overlooked

Agree with Baben. It's easy for dealers to suggest areas at fault and offer no guarantee. ARB bushes are cheap and easy to fit. Have the LR spacers been used on the ARB bushes that were brought out in order to compress the bushes onto the bar?

I've found a way to gauge for knocking on the lower arm bushes is to tie a rope onto the arm behind the wheel and give it a firm tug outwards, similarly getting your foot on the arm in the same place and pushing may give you similar results in the opposite direction. Mine didn't need much tugging to get that familier knocking sound.

Is this a Land Rover website or a #$%^&*((@! Northern Transvaal teaparty? Sies Baben, you live in Kyalami. you should support the Lions Thumbs Up

I had bushes replaced at 72000km on the one D3 and no problems with the other at over 82000km. Both cars used off road.

Did you hear that they have raised the minimum drinking age for Bulls Supporters to 32?

It seems they want to keep alcohol out of the high schools.

Two reasons why it's so hard to solve a Blue Bulls murder?

1. The DNA is all the same

2. There are no dental records

Who invented the toothbrush?

Not a Bulls Supporter (If it had been, it would have been called a teethbrush)

Did you hear about the R3 million Blue Bulls Lottery?

The winner gets R3.00 a year for a million years.

A new Blue Bulls law was just recently passed...

When a couple gets divorced, they are STILL cousins.

Did you hear that the Blue Bulls President's mansion burned down?

'Ja, almost took out the whole trailer park. The library was a total loss too. Both books went poof up in flames and the president hadn't even finished colouring one of them!'

How do you know you're staying in a Blue Bulls motel?

When you call the front desk and say, I gotta leak in my sink, and the clerk replies: 'Go ahead'.

Bulls pick-up line: "Your pretty eyes is laaik spanners... Evrie taaim I looks at you, my nuts taaiten"

What do you call a female Blue Bulls supporter wearing a white tracksuit in Pretoria on a Saturday afternoon?

The bride ....

On the LCA bushes: there is 2 part numbers on those parts. the alternative is for the armoured and thus heavier disco. It's not a lot more expensive than the original but will go further. I think it's about R300 more per bush.
