Battery Dead and Smoking Under Bonnet???

Wondering if anyone can help.

Battery light came of D3 couple of days ago. Car died at side of the road so went to the local Halfords and purchased a new BOSCH battery. They tested the old one and confirmed its had it.... Took the new one back to the car and fitted it. Although once its connected i start to get smoke come from the left hand side of the engine, without the engine running.

Inside the battery light stays on.... Anyone else had this, or can give me a hint what it is.

Currently battery disconnected and will stay that way until getting to a garage...

Help anyone please.

Smoke from left hand side could be the fuel burning pre-heater, but equally sounds more like a nasty short circuit causing the problem, I'd leave it well alone until properly checked or the lot could go up!!

left hand as you look from the front? I'd say your alternator just popped, as the battery light came on and stayed on with mine and then the alternator started to smoke!

everything comes on in the car. Just checked the voltage on the screen and it shows 11v even when running. Not sure what it should be, but doesn't go up when cars running.

What sort of price are new alternators, might have to start the ball rolling getting a new one.

11v is bad - that is what mine was showing with a fully charged battery but with a dead alternator - get your wipers, lights, heated seats/ screen and stereo on, then watch it drop - gets to 9v before the satnav screen goes off and then the bongs start.

Just had a new alternator fitted, now showing 14v while running and 13.5 - 14v with all the electrics on.

Alternator from TLO was about £150+surcharge IIRC!

Mine went in a puff of smoke in February.

Looks like the life of an alternator is 5 years then!

I had to reset my sunroof after the alternator was replaced... yet another invaluable tip learnt from the forum.

My alternator popped its clogs at the end of April, luckily as TFC was servicing the car! Even more luckily, my local stealer had one in stock so TFC was able to change it for me straight away Thumbs Up

My car was 4 and a half years old at the time with 72K on the clock.
Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills Smile

It was the speed of things that worried me!

The red battery warning came on so I stopped and looked at the manual, which said seek urgent assistance... It wasn't wrong, I drove straight to the garage where the car died with a puff of smoke. I was so glad that it was there and not on the side of a motorway... it only took about 15 minutes.
