What type of trailer plug is on a discovery 3

Hi Gang

Exactly what type of wiring plug is standard for the trailer connection on a LRD3?

Can yoo buy adaptors to the utilux type?

All help appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Mark, the existing plug is a European type and when you get a tow kit from the dealer, it comes with a conversion plug.

If you are setting up your own, be very careful of this conversion as European wiring is completely different to ours and it not just a case of connecting wire in a different order, it has to be done correctly or a number of different problems can arise from fault indications in the D3 to incorrect lighting operations on the trailer.

Note, this is not just a D3 problem, VWs and other European cars have the same problem.

my understanding was that all Oz D3's came with the tow pack as standard and the plugs on mine are to Oz ADR seven pin plug. is this not the case or is it only HSE's that get it standard.
can you expand on 'the utilux type'

A quick queston on the 7 pin plug. I have noticed that the fridge in the caravan is not working correctly when connected to the car for DC operation.

Checked out the socket (Black) and normally the no 2 pin (shown as reversing or accessories on most plug diagrams) has no reading on the multi meter when either ignition and/or or in reverse.

Does anyone else have this problem???

Am in for a service in the next couple of weeks. Will have to get it checked out and possibly have a larger capacity cable "hot wired" from either the vehicle or secondary battery.

PS. I have a HSE TDV6

Have you checked the fuse? (NSR boot 'pocket')
IF the sockets fitted are standard UK ones, it's the white socket that is the supplementary one

Thanks 10forcash

Have checked out the fuses and all OK but they do not relate to Aust sockets.

Aust vehicles have an additional 7 pin 'black' socket fitted next to the UK 'white' socket.

Regards

On UK vehicles the Black or 12N socket (fitted on the right on the D3) is standard for just about all trailers, the White or 12S socket isn't always required but is normally used when towing a caravan for powering the fridge etc.

This may help...

Pin  Cable Colour   12N Connector Function     12S Connector Function *

1    Yellow         Left Indicator             Reverse Lamps
2    Blue           Fog Lamps (if fitted)      Spare
3    White          Ground                     Ground for pin 4
4    Green          Right Indicator            Permanent 12V power / charge
5    Brown          Right Side / Taillamp      Spare
6    Red            Brake Lamps                Fridge
7    Black          Left Side / Taillamp       Ground for pin 6

12N connectors are normally coloured black. Pins 2, 5 and 7 in the plug are female, others are male.

12S connectors are normally coloured white. Pins 2 and 5 in the plug are female, others are male.

Note that the 12N and 12S ground wiring must not be connected together and must be connected to the towing vehicle separately via the associated connector.

* 12S pinouts to post 1999 European standard. Pre-1999 caravans are wired differently

Utilux.. hi folks, what I referred to was the old Utilux Alloy plug and socket set. Originally 6 pin and then became 7 pin. They had an alloy lid that lifted up and then held the plug in by downwards spring pressure on the top of the plug.

That is what my camper trailer has (the male plug), so I'm looking for an adaptor harness from the Disco to the trailer without having to make my own.

Any clues?

Cheers

there is a fuse (44p) in the CJB which feeds this cable also, try checking that one also. 15 amps the colour coding is not per aust standards but is wired up the same way as we use it.
according to the diags, pin 4 on the white plug should have a permanent, unswitched supply from the batt.

Mark, have you tried Auto Pro or your local auto electricians. let your fingers do the walking

RetiredBob,

Have been down the same road. The D3 uses pin 5 for external charge whereas most Australian camper trailers if so fitted use Pin 2. In my case using a Kimberley Kamper the standard wiring requires me to remove the pin 5 fuse so as to stop it permanently activating all the lights on the camper until I have pin 2 and pin 5 swapped at the fuse box so I can charge the batteries on the trailer on the move. The obviuos alternative is to fit an andersopn plug and heavy duty cable direct from the battery/alternator system. When I was researching this, an auto sparky told me this is common on European vehicles.

Drivesafe,

Can you elaborate on what the problems may be if I just swap the wiring for pin 2 and pin 5 at the fuse box and re-rate the fuses accordingly. Current should not be a problem as the charge circuit on ther trailer is through a 10 A, 3 stage charger and the most I have seen it draw is 9.6 A at full loadwhen conected to a 240V supply.

SMK - Interesting

All the other pins/connections work as stated with the van including pin 5 for the brakes.

I have an Anderson Plug coming from my secondary battery to charge the batteries in the van. This works well..
