week up in the scottish borders
Just got home from a week up in the scottish borders. Before we went i had strict instructions NOT to go offroad but after some wild weather over the last few days i had no choice
this ford near our cottage is usually a trickle about 6"deep
The depth board said 2ft,but towards the middle was a bit deeper. Some more holiday snaps in my gallery. At least the pooch enjoyed it

Had a look at wetroads and it is the one on this page listed as chirnside
also went through the abbey st bathans ford(same river) although that one wasnt in flood that day and i think i would be impassable if it was.The car was being pushed sideways in a low flow due to the volume of water and loose bottom(the ford, not me ) so in flood i wouldnt like to try it

Hi Paul,
The "depth gauges" in Oz (and, I suspect, in UK too) are calibrated to the deepest part of a crossing, while being located near the approach in order for them to be readable before you get into trouble.
Have a look at one one "dry" land and you will generally find that they don't start at 0.

i think they are supposed to be here too but they were uprooted in recent storms and just stood against a suitable prop. The guage at chirnside read less than 2 feet but at the deepest point it was just reaching the air intake on the highest suspensions setting. The depth wasnt really a problem,it was the force of the water coming down,i think a lighter car would have been pushed downstream

I now understand your lack of confidence in the reading.
SNIPat the deepest point it was just reaching the air intake
Sounds like time to get that bow-wave working for you.
SNIP The depth wasnt really a problem,it was the force of the water coming down,i think a lighter car would have been pushed downstream
I'm sure that you are right. Another plus in owning a D3.
