Go faster & use less fuel!

Whilst driving my 3.0 at an indicated 105 kph (100 actual) on a flat road (across the Hay Plains) whilst towing a trailer (1 tonne all-up and with a cage and tarp up front) I found that setting CC 1 notch faster caused the instantaneous fuel consumption to average at least 0.5 L/100km less after a few seconds. Slowing again reverted to the higher consumption after a few seconds so I increased speed again and consumption dropped again. I suspect I found the point where the EGR valves were being closed due to the extra load. I got home just a little sooner than expected.

My LR dealer in Bordeaux borrowed me a D3 this summer
, my D4 beeing delayed and I made the same observation.
I had a small trailer with a scooter and I was following a friend
Towing our rib boat and then driving around 110 120 km/h.
My remaining mileage went up at 120 showing less consumption !
I think it is due to the ideal and optimum Rpm of the engine, giving the est results
For thé consumption .
But there is maybe another explanation ... If anyone knows ??

You need to marry the BSFC of the engine to the drag being experienced and find the happy medium

There is certainly something in this, which may seem counterintuitive.

I recently did a run from the middle of Ireland to home, via Rosslare. Although not speeding excessively, I wasn't taking prisoners on the run through Ireland and the bit in Wales and England was in the early hours so a good speed, and marginally over the limits, but again not a lot.

Average speed was around 58mph over just under 400 miles, and the tank fill to tank fill consumption was the best I have recorded yet at ~27.5mpg actual, with the computer average showing 30mpg exactly.

This puts the D4 consumption into the realms of normality, when compared to my two previous D3's and shows it doesn't pay to be pussy footed with the go faster pedal.

I look forward to the day when there's a reasonable way to block the 3.0's EGR valves as I think they cause extra fuel consumption on light throttle. In the meantime maybe we should just use a bit more throttle and enjoy the spirited performance.
