HDC Fault At Ploughing Championships |
|
Attended the National Ploughing Championships in Athy last Thursday. 4x4's were directed to park in fields that resembled a mud bath which had been used for car parking for first day then abandoned after two nights of heavy rain. Went in through first field following about ten others and followed by about ten more. Stuck to the ruts, in low box, off road height, mud ruts terrain setting on, DSC and HDC off, trotting along fine watching others sliding and some getting stuck, smiling that I was in a D3 when all of a sudden there was that dreaded bong followed by HDC fault, special programmes off, suspension lowering. Smile quickly wiped from my face as my "dependable" D3 lowered me into access height in the bloody mud. Had to stay going so not to upset those behind and slid sideways to the edge watched by many who were being transported to site in tractors and trailers from farther out car parking areas in the fresh fields. Turned off ignition, it reset itself, no faults and off I went through the two remaining fields, restoring what little credibility I had left.
Any clues as to what caused it?
Never been dropped in it when I most needed it before!

Hi James,
Every other normal working day tends to take me through bogs, forests, mud ruts and open hill side and those gremlins never bother me when working on my own. May be they just wanted to bring me down a peg or two whilst everybody was watching.

not had that happen to me but I have had it when parked up in Grass Gravel Snow - 5 miles down a dead-end ice/snowy track in Cumbria - got in , started it up and got "Special Programs Not Available" - it only cleared once I took out the key and locked/unlocked the doors. Got back in and all was fine.
I must say I was a bit worried about driving the 1 in 4 icy tracks with no HDC.
Bought snow chains after that - £120 is very cheap for "just in case".
That said, special programs were very reliable the rest of the winter and used extensively on 4x4 Response duties.
