play in the steering rack? |
|
Howdy collective LRD3 knowledge,
I've had my 06 in to the mechanics a number of times with front end "issues", we've gone through bushes, bearings and struts, which made the feel and handling all the better. However now over slightly rough terrain (on and off road) there's a shudder / vibration from the front end when cornering, my mechanic (local authorised LR repairer ) who I've got the utmost confidence in tells me it's now most probably a bit of play in the steering rack and to just deal with it (well that's what I heard), what the
Has anyone else come across a similar issue and how did you overcome it?
Thanks
Justin

I had this same sort of problem which was eventually solved by replacement of the lower steering shaft as mentioned in the L/R TSB copied below.
This problem has been reported on by members of DISCO3.CO.UK Forum and a LR TSB issued as below.
Models: LA - Discovery 3
LS - Range Rover Sport
Title: FAQ 22241 - Steering light knock over bumps.
Engineer Name: Townsend, Ken
Last Modified: 24-APR-06
Category: Chassis
Symptom: 303000 Steering/Handling
Content: User will report light knock over bumps. Some will show slight free play in steering.
Cause is LOWER steering shaft (Under bonnet) NOT the steering rack.
With vehicle static, engine off, check for free play in steering aprox +/- 3 degrees, with gentle input.
Also some vehicles may exhibit a light knock on uneven surfaces between 10 to 15 mph.
If the shaft is the cause please use new part number QMN500240 (RHD) or QMN500250 (LHD) to repair as this has improved characteristics for noise. Part was introduced to production at L319 - LA390436
L320 - LS956379. If shaft does not resolve knocking noise please submit an EPQR and contact dealer technical support.
Hope this is of some assistance.

I've had all the usual changed, ball joints, bushes and lower steering shaft. I still had slight rattles under certain conditions, especially when turning from stopped or very slow. It was the ball joints at the steering rack on the tie rod or track rods. Now all OK. 2013 D4, E-diff, Vision pack

Got my Grabber AT2's fitted on the front the other day and the front alignment adjusted.
There is a small amount of play on the nearside front wheel, guy in the garage says it's
coming from the end of the steering rack.
Where did you guys get your steering rack ends and is it an easy fix?
Pretty new to the forum, had a Disco 2 for 4yrs until I rolled it down some hills in the snow,
took the plunge with a 2005 S, luvvin it and this forum. Spend most lunch breaks "listening"
to you guys,
Thanks for any help given. I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go

I've finally cured my steering knock, it was the lower steering column, there was slight wear in the telescopic shaft. Approx £60 and pretty easy to fit.

I have play in my front end. the mechanic showed me after removing the boot that the play comes from inside the rack. he says replace it, or be doomed to crazy tire wear. so I find a place the manufactures them, dealer didn't have them, and order one for an 06 lr3(state side). finally it gets here and the mechanic, after draining the fluid, says its the wrong one. the one they sent has a variable option on it. not exactly sure what that means, but the guy says there is a plug on there to hook up to the computer so that at various speeds it can change the ratio it turns.
now I am going to have to call the place I got it in the morning and ask about it, but it sounds like I need to return it and if they don't have the one I am looking for I need to go to a wrecking yard, no telling what that one will be like.
so, have you guys heard of an '06 with a variable option on the rack(looks like range rover may have had one that year), if so, can I modify mine to use it, if not I guess I will go on as planned.
thanks
