While finishing the last 5 km of a 100km MTB race today I got caught out in a hailstorm. The hail was intense and the size was up to 50 to 60mm. Beside being battered and bruised on the hands, arms and back I was lucky I had a helmut on. The tracks turn to a sea of white ice - lucky I didn't have far to go, it had been a bloody hard day already.

Well my D3 is not so well. The bonnet, roof, LH door sills and tailgate (top surface) are well and trully dented.
I need to call the insurance company tomorrow to ask what to do but I would also like to know if the roof is repairable. I'm sure the bonnet and tailgate can be replaced but I'm uncertain of the roof.
If the D3 does in fact become a right off then it puts me in a dilemma of having to replace the D3 and and set it up another for our touring. Also the issue of no (reasonably easy to get and priced) 19" MT tyres has always held me back
Could you please let me know what were people's experience with hail damage - repaired (what did they do), right off, dent master or soemthing else.
Thanks

My parents had their Jag damaged by a severe storm in Spain a while ago. It looked like it had been painted with hammerite!
It was repaired by the insurance co. They treated it like any other weather related accident.

Not a D3/D4, but in the mid-80s, I had a car hail damaged. I shopped around and found a place that would cut the turret off and weld a new one on, as well as replacing the boot lid and bonnet. Most of the shops at the time would just sand the holes back and fill with bog!
I don't think you'll get a clear answer on your prospects - until you get a few quotes. Hopefully your insurer will allow you to have some say in who repairs it.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Rob

Hi Chris,
That's a real !
A couple of years ago, my D3 and I were caught in a hailstorm in Pennant Hills (northern Sydney), nothing like as bad as yours though.
I took it to Alto body shop, who were inundated (if you know what I mean) with dented BMWs. They suggested that I get it assessed by a dentless repair firm who they recommended. This Coy said that they could repair the damage.
I must get a round tuit.
I have also heard of a D3 being written off after a hailstorm in Perth.
Best of luck,

I had my Subaru Outback hail damaged in 2004 with around 50 or so dents on the roof and bonnet back. I got Elite Dent Removals (one man band) to do the work and he came and setup in my apartment block garage and got all the dents out in half a day or so. Excellent job. Cheaper than the insurance excess. This guy had panel beating experience prior to the job, so knew the characteristics of the different types of metals.
The hailstones weren't as large as your ones though.
PM me if you want the details (he's Sydney based though...)Suzuki Vitara 3dr

I dropped by Dent Wizards near my work today and they took one look and said I needed a bonnet and the roof was beyond paintless dent repairs.
My insurance company registered a claim over the phone and I asked them to recommend me 2 repairers near where I work. I went and saw one of them and they told me a new bonnet, roof, roof channel covers are required, the rest will be repaired (ie. doors and tailgate). The scuttle panel (the plastic grill under the wipers) has 2 big holes through it as well . The plastic looks very brittle after 5 years.
The smash repairer said it will take 4 weeks and they will check on availability of parts from LRA and lodge the repairs with my insurer.
I was concerned about being told it would be written off and was told that the repairs would not be more than 50% of my agreed value. Thank goodness for that. Yes I would like a D4 but not just at this time.
So timing is now the issue - will it be done before Xmas of after ? I wonder if LRA carrier roofs and bonnets in stock?

When was that Gareth?
I had a Volvo 740 severely damaged by hail in Sitges, Spain around 1990/91.
Mine looked like someone had been round it with a ball head hammer.
It was only 3 months old and every panel had to be renewed.
Company insurance didn't pay out as it was the work of the 'big man' up in the sky!!

I would think that the tailgate would need to be replaced as well. It is aluminium and difficult to repair.
I would be asking for a replacement.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

There is one small dent on the top of the tailgate near the brake light. The paint has cracked because it appears the hailstone has hit a spot where there is another layer of aluminium underneath and it has hit that point of overlap. I would wonder if a replacement tailgate is really necessary for that dent.
I'm pretty worried about the repairer needing to unpick the roof and remove it meaning the roof lining needs to be removed and windscreen needs to come out. I really hope they can get it all sealed up again and nice and square again and don't loose to many bits in the process. Hopefully there a roof braces that stay in place to keep body square.

I thought it would have a lot of dings.
The roof skin is glued to the steel frame so should be easy to get right.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
