20" wheels - think twice

We have finally given up on our 20" wheels. These came with the dealer spec'd car and would not have been on our wish list. In the 9 months we have had the vehicle (16,000 miles) we have had 4 puntures, each time destroying the tyre at a cost of over £250 to replace each. Today the wife had another flat and LRA have (quite rightly) condemed the tyre and wheel this time. She insists she didn't hit anything or drive the tyre whilst flat. The damage to the tyre and wheel however tell another story Shocked

So we are faced with spending upwards of £800 to replace the wheel and tyre, or call it a day and replace the whole set with 19" wheels / tyres.

So if anyone wants 3 x 20" wheels and tyres - make me an offer. 2 tyres and wheels in decent condition. 1 tyre has a chunk missing out of the rubbing strip and quite a bad kerbing.

And if anyone has a 19" set for sale - I would be seriously interested !

So in future before you order your D4 with these on :

Think twice. If you and/or your wife are careful drivers, never go off road, have pot hole free roads with very low kerbs where you live. Or you own a LR dealership or tyre shop and can afford to replace them when damaged. Then no worries. But if you fail any of the above - beware - you might find these an expensive choice.

I just did over 4000klm with a Caravan attached. The D4 now has 15000klm on it.

Some of the roads were covered in sharp rocks. I had drive off the edge of the road countless times to move around road trains. I hit pot holes that could hide a large English town.

Not one single puncture on my 20" tyres.

I don't think the fault lies with the wheel tyre combination.

So what you suggesting ? Probably that we are Censored poor drivers and / or very unlucky ? Big Cry

The wife has had 2 Disco 3's with 19" tyres totalling over 100,000 and I have had 2 RRS's with 20" tyres also over 100,000 miles. She had no punctures at all in her D3's and I have had one in the RRS. So an average of 1 puncture each 200,000 miles in D3/RRS compared to 1 every 3,000 miles on D4 20's.

I think the 20" wheels and soft Pirelli Scorpions are a factor here. But best of luck to you. Thumbs Up

sound like you have been very unlucky. I've over 28k miles on my 20's (on D3) with no puncutures. Maybe it is the Scorpions.

I had 19"s on my D3, few kerbs, one puncture (sidewall kerb - my fault)
Before I ordered D4 with 20"s I checked the prices - very little difference between 19"s and 20"s to replace.
Pays your money, takes your choice.

I think you are just unlucky with punctures, wheels won't affect the amount of punctures you would get. Frustrting though.

This experience has got nothing to do with the size of the wheels but more to do with the tyre/driver/terrain.

If you want to guard against punctures and yet still retain the 20" rims, then I suggest you go for a better tyre.
My choice is the beefy Copper Zeon LTZ.
As this is a Sports/AT tyre it's far more puncture proof, got very deep 12mm tread and reinforced sidewalls.
Apart from longer tread life they'll give you extra off-road ability [if/when needed] but with no extra road noise.
Been running these for 1.5 years and cannot fault them.

Now happily running standard 19" rims and tyres - and loving the feel of a bit more rubber between the wheel and the road. Feels like walking in trainers rather than high heel shoes. And a full set of brand new 19"'s cost about the same as one new 20" plus tyre.

I agree that we have been unlucky and that some poor driving is also in the mix (see this post about 2 of our collection of punctures http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post571782.html#571782) but also still feel that the 20" wheel leaves the profile of the tyres too low to shrug off kerbs, stones, potholes etc. And a flat Pirelli Scorpion tyre can be totally trashed in just a few yards as the sidewalls are made of butter.

Now have sold three remaining good 20"s so we are destined to remain 19" advocates indefinitely now. Maybe if we suffer another puncture or trashed wheel on the 19"'s we will have definite proof that the puncture problem is 100% operator error. Time will tell (or at least provide a clue or two...).

By the way - this post was originally deliberately posted in D4 General section as I intended it to be seen by readers considering buying a D4 and seeking pointers on spec. I am guessing that few of them will look at the Wheels & Tyres section for such info - so can this thread please go back where it started ?

I drove over conditions you are unlikely to see in the UK towing a 2300kg caravan.

I am suggesting there is no issue with the 20" combo as sold on the D4.

Bad driving Bad luck who know's but there is nothing wrong with the wheel tyre combo.
