MY11 HSE - Shark Finn Help needed ASAP please |
|
Hi all,
Well I finally managed to dislodge the shark fin off the roof of the D4 HSE. Can anyone tell me if it's aneasy fix that I can do myself before I have to go to work on Tuesday or if there's a good indie for this in Sheffield. I'm having a few problems at work so if push comes to shove could use the main dealer but I'd like to understand how it sticks on. At the momemnt it just swivels so assume I'll break the wires soon but there are no obvious mountings. 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Where is the waterproofing ? Around the edge pf the fin or somewhere internal ? Looks like I may have to bite the bullet with a stealer then given that it's only 12 months old. 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

It mounts onto a 3mm raised bracket that protects internals and is sealed where wire goes through roof
The back part has some rubber edging strip round it. Doesn't really do anything

Stuart - thanks for the info. It's really loose and if I lift it up, I can see what looks like a plastic disk underneath which may be what you mean. How do I reattach it though ? I can see 2 screws from the top of the unit but I think they just hold the 2 parts of the fin together. 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Undo 2 screws at top
They are anti tamper torx screws. If you don't have the correct bit you can unscrew them with a small flat blade screwdriver
This allows you to remove back section
The front section then just pushes of the bracket
You can then reattach the bracket to the roof
I use a product called tiger seal available from most paint shops or car accessory shops
You could also use 3m double sided tape
To remove antennae fully, open tailgate the headlining has a bit secured by clips, give it a tug and it comes of
You will see the bit it plugs into it , then disconnect it
Any problems let me know

Thanks Stuart - I'll give it a go in the morning. I didn't notiice any sticky pads underneath and there didn't seem to be too much play in the wires so your suggestion makes sense. 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Slightly off topic sorry but can anyone confirm what is in the "sharks fin" ie is it the GPS (seems rather large for that) or an external aerial?

Frustrating ! Couldn't get the screws out with a flat blade screwdriver so invested six quid at Maplins only to find out that a normal torx screw is 6 point star and the Disco uses a 5 point star ! Gave up and called out LRA who said he'd never seen one of these become detached before and said he had no bonding kit, so I'm off to Guy Salmon Wakefield on Friday. Meanwhile, it's now stuck in position with the previously suggested masking tape.
Anyone want to buy a set of torx spanners ? 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Stuart - that's what's puzzling me if it's an antennae for the phone when there is now no traditional phone connector, it implies that there is a phone car-kit built in which is then just accessing your sim card via bluetooth but using it's own hardware/antennae etc?

the large one on the d4 roof is for the dab radio, whereas the shark fin on early d3 is for phone. i think, although knights templar has the large one from the d4 on his 56 plate, and he has built in phone system, but no dab. its a landie thing
