| Metalised vs Non-Metalised Window Tint |

I'm looking to add window tint to my car when delivered and have been getting some product info and prices. High price so far is $730  for a 10 layer metalised product while low price is $280 non-metalised 2 layer product. Both are guaranteed for "life" whatever that means but the more expensive product claims slightly higher heat blocking rating.
However the non-metalised product was recommended by one shop due to it not blocking radio signals. The same shop is happy to supply a metalised product if that's what I want but the owner was concerned that the radio aerial may be located in an area were reception could be compromised.
So I'm wondering where is the radio aerial, and will signal be reduced by fitting metalised window tint?

Radio aerials are in the rear side windows (which one is actually plugged in depends on where you are in the world) so it's I'd guess that it is possible that a metallised film would affect them. The End

I had Tint a Car Midnight express applied.
The FM transmission of the radio is not affected.
It does give some poor reception with AM, but I never use it, so it is of no concern.
I have also had installed a Clarion 10" DVD TV tuner set for the kids, and the internal aerial of the TV tuner were applied to the bottom of the back windows below the FM aerial of the radio. This has had no affect on the reception for the FM or TV system.

Legally in Aust. you can have a maximum tint of around 30% of the windows excluding the main front window.
However I have seen a lot with the rear windows black out like the US limos, but they can not have tint on the drivers and front passenger windows, as it would exceed the legal limit. Great if want to black out the back part of your car, but defeats having tint on the front passengers and proctection from the sun, which is why I got it in the first place.
It has no affect at night driving, limits external light in from other cars.
As to pics, I try to get around to it in the coming weeks. end of Fin year limits my spare time at the moment to spend too much time here on the net.

If you are using a GPS you might want to consider where it's antenna is and how the metalised tint effects it also.... Thanks for the feedback guys - I think I'll go for a non-metalised product just in case. If it turns out to be less than satisfactory (which I doubt) I can always get it changed to something else without breaking the bank.
Good pickup on the GPS bit Haggis - have to admit that I hadn't thought about that one. But it probably won't have too much of an impact anyway. I've got a Road Angel and have used it with good results in my Patrol, Astra, and 1940 Cadillac Coupe. Both the Patrol and Astra have tinted windows, don't know if they're metalised or not.
When I get my car I hope to be able to set-up the Road Angel in much the same way as others have set up their Tom Tom's etc - there is at least one thread on this forum with text and pics.

Spoke with Solace window tinting last week - they quoted $430 to tint a D3 with metalised tint. They didn't recommend the non-metalised, but did confirm it would only affect AM reception.

Sounds like your price is very close to the same price I was quoted from Tint-a-Car. At this stage I'm still going to go with non-metalised from a company called SunGuard. The product is called Shadow and is specifically stated to not interfere with "keyless locks, GPS, and Satellite Radio". I do quite a bit of touring and there are just so many places FM isn't available or is rubbish. So I'd like to ensure that AM reception is as good as I can get.
Catweasel - I'm picking up my car on Thursday and will probably get it tinted next week. Will let you know what I think of the company afterwards.

Guys ...DEFINITLY GET THE METALIZED FILM...the metalic film in window tint does all of the reflecting of heat....any other just uses dyes to cut the glare, and the dyes are the fist thing that breaks down....also the darker the tint the more dye goes into the color layers....ever seen purple window tint? it never started that way it was originally a dark window tint but the dyes have been leached by the UV rays.
There are a couple of Metals used in tint. One is Nickel which 3M uses, another is titanuim which all of the top shelf tints use. The main determining factors of a good window tint is the UV reflection, heat reduction, infra red transmission and warrantee. Anything else such as darkness and glare reduction is only the dye part of tint and has nothing to do with the performance...
