Paul we ordered our D4 in October - delivery expected mid January.
Unless you are lucky and find a dealer that has a "on spec" car then yes it is quite normal - the other car I was interested in was the VW Tuareg 3 and that the wait is until Summer.
Car manufacturers just do build large stock piles of cars to sit on old airfields anymore. LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

Another issue being that dealers are allotted a quote per month and once they've sold those the won't get any more unless another dealer under sells, then the spare capacity gets redistributed. When ordered my D4 last November I was originally told, not before April because the dealer's quota was filled, but when I went down to do the paperwork two days later they'd managed to secure another two vehicles and I got mine beginning of Feb 2010.

Thats not bad. When I picked mine up in September (on an end of June order), i was told that Feb was the delivery time now unless you could get a dealer allocated vehicle that didnt have a buyer yet (I believe a shortage of engines was an issue).
So, returning back to the typical 3 month waiting list suggests they have improved capacity. Audi were talking about a 7 month wait on Q7s when I was looking back in June. Although I find the Q7 ugly and I didnt like how it drove (it felt like an estate car). Plus, after two Audi cars with poor reliability, I wanted a change of brand.
To expect a car to be ordered and built and delivered in 3 weeks is a bit unreasonable.

Probably be lucky to get one before Xmas but I ordered mine on 30th October and it should be ready mid-December. In fact, my dealer has confirmed that it's being built in the next few days. I just need to be able to get the XF out of the drive so they can PX it ! 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT
2019 Suzuki Vitara AllGrip
Gone BMW X5 xDrive 30d M Sport (F15)

Stock.. what's stock? AFAIK, there's precious little in the way of idle stock at the moment and all car manufacturers are building virtually to order in order to minimise the cash that they have sat in fields.
My anticipated D4 Commercial was ordered in early August and should have been built in Jan but now looks like late Feb. Having said that, the Fun Prevention Officer's F2 has just come out of the factory a month early...
Sorry to say but short of sitting in a dealership with a bucket of cash (and taunting them with, "look what you could have if you find me a vehicle..."), I fear that you may struggle to find something pre-Christmas unless you are happy to take (and pay for...) whatever spec they happen to find available.
Wish you well in your quest, sir... D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

Can you not get a used year old car from a dealer or are you wanting a brand new one ?
My dealer has a few 1 year old cars in stock.
