AA or RAC??

Guys,

Need your help, I'm day off tomorrow and going to sign up for Breakdown Cover.

AA or RAC, very similar prices for Recovery/Home Start? What do you think, who do you think is best?

Also, been reading up on their Breakdown Warranty, RAC seems better value for this as it covers parts upto £2000 per repair whereas AA is only £500, both have £25 excess.

Anybody got it, used it, is it good value?

I know people have been raving about ADAC, biggest recovery group in Europe, they are very keenly priced as they have retrosective agreements with a load of different countries, although they are German, you will get sorted by the AA or RAC here. Now their site is limited in English, see link, but if anyone on here speaks German perhaps we could get a translation, apparently if you do not have a German address you need to call them up on the number in the link. They have their own rescue fleet including helicopters, ambulances, trucks, planes e.t.c. the cover covers you in any vehicle or spouse as well and even children if you opt for that, this includes non EEC countries incl USA and Canada. There was a mention of 66 Euros for a couple per year including replacement car if required,chauffeur too, plus monthly magazine c/w multiple discounts.

Just need it translated as all docs come in German Razz But I guess you just need the telephone number and a summary of benefits. I have LR cover at the moment and insurance supplied cover on other cars but will certainly look into it, being covered in any other car where stated seems handy Wink

Not sure there is much difference between the two in terms of breakdown cover when called out.

The biggest difference I have noticed is what your need to be recovered. AA relay the car back, passing the car from truck to truck where as the RAC recover it back end to end on the same truck.

As people say, you pays your money you take your chances.

If you go AA, since they do the LRA stuff now you'll have more chance of them looking at the car, I presume

A mate who works for RAC says his system wont work on a LR

I have been a member of both and AA guys will try harder to fix for you as they get an extra payment for every car fixed at the side of the road. Well thats what the last guy told me who i had to deal with. I dont think the RAC do the same. I have had good service from both but the AA for me seem to deliver just that bit more. But i used to swear by Green Flag!

I can't comment on either with regard service etc not had to use them. I bought full EC cover for family home recovery, roadside - onward journey etc etc full kit via the Tesco clubcard scheme - it cost me nothing just a fist full of vouchers (which were gathering dust) and full price is something like £275 ???

I took the view that most likely breakdown I would get would be electrical and it would be unlikely that either firm would be able to repair at road side.

I got AA warranty because my Mrs has been a member since 85 thinking i was in safe hands Whistle last two claims didnt want to know ,just like the rest of em they try to wriggle out of anything ,must say the breakdown service has been great but think twice about there warranty Evil or Very Mad

Aye, the chap tried to sell me the warranty but I opted not to go for it.

I think the RAC Warranty might be better, it covers upto £2k per claim.

AA since 1988 always great service - kids find it funny that their membership AA cards have a 'member since' date of before they were born!

I know I can advise to avoid Brittania, I recently broke down (yep, in the D3) and they took over 3 hours to attend, and I had SWMBO and the daughter with me, and it was -5 outside.

The truck was a local agency garage, driven by Mr Grumpy, who made it clear it was a inconvience to be called out, no facilities onboard, not even a flask of hot water.

Very poor, my complaints have realised £20 in compensation so far Shocked

Definitely looking at either AA or RAC when my renewal come round
 Never get mad - get even !!

06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k

previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

We called the AA a few years ago when the petrol filler cap wouldnt unlock (Vauxhall, cap linked to the central locking like the D3) and we were nearly out of petrol. They couldnt have been more helpful, such as telling us how long the patrol would take to get to us, was there anyone they could call to tell them where we were, was it a priority if there were women/children stranded etc.

As it happens I found the boot entry method and unlocked it from inside, then called them back to abort the patrol having to attend. Nonetheless very impressed with their communication.

I went with AA,

npinks has got a point with them having the LR contract so I would expect they might have a bit of LR training or experience! Thumbs Up

Yes they are great, great at breaking the plastic screws that hold on the plastic front tow eye guard, mine was towed away so many times I had an alloy sump guard fitted with the exposed tow eye, no problems since Whistle
