Have been looking into this as if get D4 will have to keep 10years plus.
Now understand why carmakers reluctant to put DAB radios in. Likelihood is DAB will not be technology of the future, therefore pointless getting DAB radio as an expensive option (OK if its part of the variant you want anyway), especially as current DAB reception often worse than FM.
Also, not may experts without a vested interest think analogue FM will be switched off in 2015. Probably means we will need an add on thingy for whatever technology wins, but won't be needed for good few years yet. Just as likely we will end up with radio over internet streamed into car over mobile networks.

I got to be honest, My D4 had the DAB option and I use it all the time. Yes admittedly there are some blank spots occassionally, but no different to Analague and in most case I find the quality better.
Can of worms duely open.... LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

My Disco 3 was it for service at Lookers Chelmsford, and they loaned me a new Freelander that was fitted with a DAB radio. Dispite fiddling with it all day, I managed only to get ONE station. Unless south Essex is a poor DAB signal area, I don't think DAB radios are much cop !!

IMHO DAB vs analogue=quantity vs quality
When I compare a DAB broadcast with its anaologue equivalent, I find the DAB broadcast is very thin-sounding.

The main issue for me is that DAB is not likely to be the technology of the future. It's still based on the MP2 compression algorithm at 128Kbps which, sound quality wise is, ahem, not the best.
Also, bear in mind the big digital TV switch over. This is going to leave a lot of nice free space in the band for other things, possibly with better bandwidth and room for larger data streams and thus better quality sound.

What about Satellite radio? Had that in the Mustang convertible hire car I had in the US last year and it was great. Though admittedly that was more to do with the choice of stations available than the quality of sound etc. (which didn't matter much 'cos I went everywhere with the roof down  ) 2001 D2 GS (I must be mad!)

I believe that Satellite Radio in the UK is only available via FreeSat or Sky (& Freeview).
My experience in the States is that signal quality is, to say the least, variable.

I wouldn't get too excited about it yet, but if it's there... Planet Rock and Radio 5 live without all the hissing make it worthwhile!

DAB is a huge improvement on FM. I've just this minute finished a drive from Dover to Warwickshire and the reception was rock solid all the way. Much more choice of stations, no need to keep retuning Radio 4 for different transmitters, text to tell me what track was playing on Planet Rock. The sound quality is more than acceptable for playing in a car. 2011 D4 Landmark, Mini Cooper SD Clubman, Range Rover Vogue SE

Unnecessary quote removed
The point I was trying to make was that the conditions for an analogue switch off in 2015 won't be met, therefore won't be left high and dry without DAB. Also other, more recent, technologies are emerging which hopefully will be able to plug into
