Sorry to eee on your bonfire , but your wrong Shocked

The gearbox adaptation has to be reset in the ecu with some sort of diagnostic equipment, not by disconnecting the battery

i Have a Disco 3 TDv6 SE. I am at the moment in France. The car is playing up and the price of repairs at the Landrover dealer here astronomical! When driving the car recently i have noticed that when i slow down to go round a corner or at an island or whatever, sometimes the car is not responding when i re accelerate and then all of a sudden it 'zooms' of again, almost like when you 'over rev a manual car, mine is an auto. Today it completely stopped and when i revved it a 'transmission fault' display appeared. If i push the gear lever in to manual drive it works better. I have contacted a garage in the Uk who said that it would need to go on the computer reader to find out the problem. I have heard about those things you can buy to reset the computer system but have no idea where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Comberford -Exactly what I have experienced recently. WD40 on the linkage has cured the problem for now (no problems at all for the last 10 days). I'm getting the gear linkage replaced tomorrow. There must be a good chance that WD40 on the area would be enough to sort you for a couple of weeks. It took me about half an hour to remove the gearbox cover, spray the linkage arm and replace the cover. Good luck.

Your car is the same vintage as mine, and what you describe is an exact match too. I have not yet been able to have the gear linkage replaced (parts expected early March), but as yet, since spraying the linkage generously with WD40 two weeks ago, the problem has not come back. There are other threads on this site explaining the problem - it seems that due the linkage gets worn/ affected by road salt, and the result is that the car does not fully engage drive, with the result being as you describe, it jumps in and out of drive on occasion, causing the revs etc. (perhaps someone with more experience could explain this better!). Too get access to the linkage, you need to remove the Auto-box cover, which is the one just to the rear of the front wheels, held on by six bolts, and then it is easy to spray the linkage. You will probably need to get the linkage replaced subsequently - the parts required are cheap. From what I have seen on the site, this may well cure the problem, but obviously Character has also had to have more work later. Have a look at this thread too (it tells you which parts are required and has a link to a further thread with description or repairing the linkage arm (and photos so you can identify what is being talked about!): http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic46344.html

Gear linkage issue and...

Been finding it hard to stay in D recently, had to stay in Sport, all the classic symptoms of the gear linkage issue. Got into the drive tonight and the gear knob came off to compound my misery. The white plastic rod running within it (which gets pulled up I think to select reverse) has sheared low down. So now, key stuck in the lock and no reverse gear Confused

Can still start up in N and raise the suspension so hopefully will be able to at least get the gear cover off and douse the linkage enough to free it temporarily. Any idea's re the plastic rod within the gear shaft... can it be accessed from underneath and replaced or will it be a dealer-only fix? Thoughts appreciated...

I have indeed. Definitely looks to be the gear lever pivot. Popped the old girl into Rogers of Bedford today as the gear knob rod needs doing too, which will require more disassembly than I have time to undertake at the moment Neutral
