Noticed the other day whilst driving that the engine revved high ( just like on a manual when you dip your clutch but still have your foot on the accelerator) thought bit strange but no lights or warning noise so thought one off,
Yesterday in the morning same thing happened, now I have been reading about the auto box linkage part does need replacing after a while as it starts to seize up also the gear lever becomes stiff to operate, pm'd TLO to see if he can source one,
Last night went out In it and put it In manual mode next thing "transmission fault" on the dash and it as slipping gears, it reverted back to auto mode itself while the gear lever position was still in M/S, changed lever to auto myself still slipping changed to M/S dash did not register sport or manual so effectively stuck in auto, pulled over turned everything off then started up again and seemed to be ok apart from when I was driving slowly in carpart it kept slipping so put it in manual and worked fine,
Any ideas guys and girls

Hi Chris - sorry to hear you have troubles. The gear linkage is easy to check and change. Parts are less than £20 from main dealer and my local garage charged less than £50 to fit and fix. The gear lever is now much smoother to move. Here's the details posted by someone cleverer than me....

Nobody said it was going to be easy.

my box has started playing up today, i feared the worst with a trip to morocco just 7 weeks away until reading about it on this great forum hopefully a new linkage will sort it out and leave me with more to spend on the trip
i had already recieved a recall notice for a break problem this week and so i just want to get it all sorted and fit for our long journey funny thing is i have an old 200tdi disco in the garage that i have bin re building for years and the "bread knife" has always said i should be going in that, she could be right

I had this a couple of months ago. There is a little metal linkage which has a pivot piece in the middle which gets cacked up with salt etc from the roads and so stops pivoting. The plate was <£4 from LR dealer. Was going to do myself but car went into my local mechanic for new discs and pads so he fitted it for about £15/20 from memory. Its like new again and properly clicks into gear again. There is a really good 'how to do it' on here from which is easy to understand and follow with good pictures too. K7MUN TDV6 S Auto, 2005, Adriatic Blue, Xenons, Harmon Kardon, SE Alloys & AT's. 170k miles. BAS Blanked EGR's, K&N Filter, new air susp compressor. 1st Landie, now full LR convert.

i have had a look at the "how to do it " post on here and your right it looks straight forward enough to fix, i have booked her in for a pre trip inspection and full service so they can do the job easily while its off the ground

Hi Trucks5181, and Ebygum32,
Were both of your Disco3's doing the same thing, and did replacing the selector lever on the side of the gearbox cure the problem?
My problem is much as Ebygum32 described.
Intermittently it lets the revs rise up, just as if it was a manual box with a slipping clutch, but there's no error code showing up on the dash, and the drive selector is no stiffer than ever to operate. It feels exactly the same as always.
If the selector lever pivot/clamp on the side of the box is the culprit, because it is gradually seizing, how does it manage to knock the gears out of drive, and back in again?
I'm finding it difficult to imagine how this can occur, but on the other hand the symptoms are exactly as if the gearbox was going from Drive into Neutral for a few second, and then back to Drive.
I guess I'm just looking for re-assurance that this relatively easy replacment of the lever and rod clamp will cure the problem.

hi donie
yours is doing the same as mine and i also feared the worst but as it turned out it was just a very easy and cheap fix, i think what happens is when the knuckle starts to seize on the arm it doesnt move the cable fully and only partly engages drive ? but what a difference it makes to the feel of your gear lever after the repair
good luck

Truck5181,
Thanks for your reply. Just the reassurance that I needed.

not wishing to eee on yer bonfire chaps, but the car "feels like new" is only a temp condition as the battery is disconnected and resets the gearbox till it learns yer driving habits.
I enjoyed such a feeling for 1000k miles (ie 1 week for me) after having the gear linkage done that week before. The gearbox worked brilliantly and even the gearbox judder went. Saturday just gone in -2 ambient temp it did the same as others ie the feeling that if it were a manual then it was like clutch slip, but as an auto it gathered speed from first in to second very slowly dispite the revs being around 2500 rpm. The next day in +1 degree, the car drove over 170 miles non stop without issue and has behaved itself ever since even over the past few frosty mornings.
One suggestion was that the oil in the gearbox needed to heat up given that this condition only prevailed for the first 10 miles on and off in sub-zero temps - when above this it has yet to do anything other than act normally.
Another suggestion was more to do with the signal being recieved by the gearbox ecu or internal issues with the gearbox itself meaning the removal/replacement.
Another was that there may be rubbish within the gearbox or a "sticky gearbox valve" (not sure on this latter point and whether this was just hype).
So next stage for me is the replacement of the complete gearbox selector and cable as there are a great number of plastic parts within the selector which I can only imagine would wear over time and of course the electronics/sender. The selector is a complete plug in and play situation and would be approx 1 - 1.5 hours workshop time, the cost of the selector is £150 plus vat (excluding any discount) so not that expensive.
Next from there is to take him over to 4tech (see site sponsors) and have a complete power flush to remove any rubbish that might cause a gearbox valve to stick (£195)
I'll keep yer posted on the progress

I've recently started getting similar symptoms - when pulling out of a very slow bend the car delays between gears and the engine revs shoot up. Today this was happening at higher speed changes too, and the car subsequently gave a "transmission fault" warning, but was OK on restart. Could this be the same gear lever pivot problem? - I don't understand why this would happen between gears on an auto box (as opposed to just when you select drive). Is there anything else I should be looking at?
