255 55 19 AT TYRES

Hi,

I'm looking to put some AT tyres on my Disco 3 HSE 19" rims. I've been advised that Genral have just bought some out that are pretty good but someone mentioned the Goodyear MTR. I don't do any serious offroading and do cover quite a few miles on the road so would appreciate any feedback on both tyres. Also, any recommendations on where to purchase them from.

Many thanks,

Jonny

MTR's are Mud Terrain tyres. Here's the Goodyear link: http://www.goodyear.eu/uk_en/tires/reposit.../index.jsp

As you'll read, they not rated very highly for anything other than off-road use. I have a set, so I'm not knocking them at all, but unless you're going to do serious off roading All Terrain tyres will suit you fine.

Pirelli ATR's have been around for a few years and are well tried & tested by forum members. They have won several AT tyre tests. The newer and usually cheaper General AT has received a lot of cover on the forum.

Ken & AJS both supply tyres.

Here's Ken's opinion:
"Sorry guys this is about AT's vs ATR's not AT2's vs ATR's

Don't matter really as you all have an opinion AT's are a nice tyre but no match for the ATR's off the black stuff

AT's perform well if you tow, go on a camp site with a tin tent etc but as you start asking more of them then you see a back to back difference in favour of the ATR

Wear rates are better on the ATR at present (could change as the tyre degrades)

The Big plus point currently for the GGAT is its retail price point against the Pirelli ATR

Don't get me wrong the AT is a good tyre but the ATR fits better for my purpose.

All I can say is I have the choice of pretty any tyre I wish (as do you_) my Choice is Discovery 3 Pirelli Ice & Snow caus I have to go were a winter tyre is required & Pirelli ATR's at all other times (That said I will be running Nokian next winter as they are simply )

As for the Defner its BFG's no question

Your money your choice"

Here's AJS's :
"Both tested back to back on two D3's, on and off-road and General was better in mud about the same on road.

ATR is harsher on tarmac, General gives lighter steering, Price is better on General, and availability.

And not forgetting customer feedback from D3 owners who have now had both in all conditions, including snow.

I don't think I have missed anything and hope this helps you to make your choice

Not much help as we are a way from you but we have both General AT and Pirelli ATR in 255/55x19 in stock.
