| D4 battery flat.....again. |

We went for a little camp on the weekend. Got the roof tent mounted satisfactorily for the moment, found a spot for all the gear. Nice. 
Set up Friday evening, relax, beer, relax. Hmm, might get another beer......
I notice that every time I open a door the screen comes back to life and the interior lights come back on, regardless of if there are already other doors open. 
So long story cut short, by Saturday morning the 'battery low' warning was on the screen. By Sunday lunch no screen or interior light and dead flat battery. After 2 days the aux battery that had been running the fridge was too low to start the car and had to jump the car off another car. 
This is obviously un-workable as a camp setup. You are in and out of the vehicle regularly. You leave the tailgate open and doors open all day.
What is the work around???? Is there some way of putting the thing to sleep? Tried moving the proximity keys away. No difference, screen still comes on and the thing wakes up when any door is opened even if tailgate or other doors are already open.

Solar charger from Maplin. Several different models - from trickle to quite a few watts. £10-£200 depending upon what you lok for, but one with a decent output would help with both batteries when camping. These don't need sun, just daylight

Press the centre button on the front courtesy light console and hold it. the interior light will flash 3 times then turn off. They will stay off until you repeat the process.
everytime you open or leave the door open the car will not "wake up" and thereby save your battery  Duncan

disco dunc has got it right. However i find that by also locking the car over night the on board computor goes to sleep and avoids an additional substantial current drain from the main battery. Depending on the amp-hour rating of your auxiliary battery vs length of stay, will determine your requirement for additional solar charging.

Hmm, doesn't seem to work for me. When I hold the centre button down for a couple of seconds the courtesy light flashes once then turns off and an 'interior lights off' message comes up on the screen. After this the interior lights don't come on when a door is opened but the screen still comes on indicating that the thing is still 'waking up'

Sorry to jump in on this thread... I leave my LR3 in the garage overnight and don't lock the car up, so should I really be locking it every time.

If you have a leisure battery and are staying a for a few days how easy would it be to disconnect negative terminal on car battery?

In this situation I try to put all the kit I might need to access such that I can reach it from the boot. Then I turn off the interior lights and lock the car. Then using the keyfob I open only the boot/Tailgate, that way I think the info screen doesn't come to life - but I could be wrong, never really checked it since getting into this routine.
Have you tried switching off the screen before turning off the ignition? LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

I'd much prefer to leave all the gear in its rightful place. (in storage bins/ drawers etc)

It's not just the entertainment screen that comes on. The screen on the dash and I believe the ECU. The whole thing wakes up.
I'm really suprised it continues to try after the low battery warning message comes up. I would have expected that software would try to protect the main battery at that point.

When I was ordering mine recently the salesman was saying that if you watch the TV without the engine running then you'll have a flat battery in about 10 minutes. It does seem a bit of an oversight on LR's part to let these gadgets flatten the battery so much so that the car won't start.
The new TDe versions of the Freelander switch themselves off at traffic lights etc to save fuel but they will not do this if the battery doesn't have ample charge to start the car again. You would have thought LR could use a similar sensor/software program to ensure that lights etc are switched off if the battery charge falls beyond a certain point.
Hopefully a software update will be forth coming....

watched it for 2 hours in a sport no issues with a dead battery or even low Battery , then we have another 2009 sport that kills its battery overnight even when it is locked that was changed for a Bosch low and behold no problems ! are we seeing crap batteries being fitted by TATA buying junk 2011 Disco 4 SDV6

Hmm that sounds more like it, I hope that is the case - that we can watch TV for a decent amount of time without the engine running and the battery going flat.
I had battery problems in the Freelander and the LR Assist guy said they had a lot of problems with the Exide batteries but now LR were fitting Varta which were meant to be better. Since he put the Varta in I've had no problems.
