Electronic Parking Brake - A Very specific Question
Apols if this has been covered elsewhere, as I know there are lots of posts about the EPB. I have a 2006 manual coil-spring D3. My question is:
"Are you supposed to be able to release the parking brake with the vehicle stationary, or only when you start to move off?"
I have been thinking my EPB is faulty. It won't release when I press the lever, although it applies perfectly. However, if I engaged reverse and tried to drive backwards against the parking brake, it would then subsequently release no problem. Today, I noticed that this also works going forwards. In fact, if I start to move off and press the parking brake release at the same time, it releases no problem and I am able to drive away (red light on dash goes out, which it won't do if I try to release the brake while stationary).
Is this how it should be, or is there likely to be an underlying problem which needs fixing?
Sorry if the answer is obvious, but I'm a D3 newbie!
Thanks.

You need to hold it down for a couple of seconds ... You also need to put your foot on the brake if not in park
It should tell you on the LCD on the instrument clusterG4 Gone ...but not forgotten

It's a manual. Do I still need to put my foot on the brake? If so, just wonder how I'm supposed to do a hill start?
I did try holding the switch down for a few seconds. (Well, it felt like a few). Maybe I'll try again, for longer.
Thanks for your help.

I have a 2006 manual too (not a coiler though). In order to release park brake you need to have either the clutch OR the brake pedal pressed. Not having one of them pressed should pop up a message on the LCD on the dash when trying to release the park brake.
Yes, hillstarts are an interesting adventure. In fact in later years they implemented an auto release, basically drive off and the park brake auto releases. You get used to it without it though and slowly perfect the technique to do hillstarts effectively.

@nighthawk
Thanks. Very useful info. I don't have an LCD display (only a simple odometer and trip counter), so I didn't know I was doing anything wrong.

Do I understand you right; that it is possible to have the parkbrake released automatically on drive-away if I reprogramme it? If so, any idea how it's done? The car is an 06 model year.
Thanks in advance

Wasn't aware of the need to update any software, but mine (05 reg) releases automatically anyway, so I'm happy!Regards,
