LR Tech on Electronics and overlanding

The latest issue of the Overland Journal, the 2011 Gear Guide, has a lovely article on the LR4 and FFRR 2011 launch on what looks like bits of the Great Divide Expedition route. Lovely photos.

However the following commentary from the article may be of interest:

"I don't ever want to be one of those old fogies who poo poos new techonlogy just because I'm uncomfortable with it. That being said, I think a lot of the resistance to electronics in overland vehicles (and I'm guilty of this), stems from just that feeling. While electronics have a reputation for being difficult to repair and diagnose in the field, really they just require a different set of tools and an understanding of the systems. I asked Sean Gorman, the technical trainer for Land Rover North America, if he thought the resistance to electronics for expedition use was realistic. His answer: Land Rover's mechanical systems don't fail any more, and electronic systems are easier to diagnose and fix as long as you have the tools and understand how to do it. Fine for him to say, right? Well, that challenge has been taken up: Sean will be attending the Overland Expo in April 2011, to give a presentation on the reliability and repairability of electronic systems in new vehicles."

Now that I would be interested to hear. Maybe they'll do a webcast of it as I can't get time off to fly over to the US to listen. Couple of interesting points the man from LR makes!

The first part... Rolling with laughter

Second part is true, to an extent. If you know how to work the diagnostic system, and know how to diagnose the faults from there, then they can be easy to fix.
Thats why a local back street garage probably wont have the knowledge to diagnose a suspension fault on your Disco 3, whereas an independent specialist or main dealer will see them all the time...
