ipod connection, low volume and tinny |
|
Hi,
Just completed adding an ipod connection. Have a V8 HSE with logic 7 and there was a 3.5mm jack behind the centre consol in the footwell.
What I did was to take the internal connections from the 3.5mm jack (I pulled out the jack and cigar lighter etc, disconnected from the 3.5mm jack and used it from inside - as would never use the 3.5mm jack, i didnt mind disconnecting these) and soldered a long 3.5mm jack lead which goes into the front of the car where I want the iPod to be (under the current CD system on the rubber mat).
When I was wiring it I was testing the cables through and they would only work one way, so I assumed I had the left, right and ground correctly chosen - I still "think" I must because it does sound "ok".
The problem is that when turning it up loud and comparing to the in-car CD player (using the same track from the ipod vs the cd version) it sounds absolutely crap - Tinny and much lower volume. Using an iPhone as the source...
Is there something that I could have done wrong with the connections ? The wrong ground or something, I am very surprised the quality from the iphone is much less than the CD version, would this be normal ?

I assume you're connecting to the ipod headphone socket? If so then that's the problem. The headphone output is not the output you want to use. You need to use the Line out which is available from the charging port. There are sockets which plug into the ipod charging port and allow you to charge via the car 12v socket and give a 3mm jack socket to connect to the aux socket. Try a search in the forum for examples.

Oh NO. lol.
Yes, I am going from the headphone socket, never realized I could go from the charging socket on the ipod, not sure I saw one of those cables for sale..
That means I have installed the wrong cable. Whoops. That is a rather annoying mistake.
Thanks for your help.

I use a Griffin "Auto Pilot". I think Tesco direct sell them. It's the wired (not the FM) type and takes the input from your charging socket, boosts it from the 12v plug (and charges your iPod at the same time) and then sends a 3.5mm jack audio lead to the Disco input. It works well IMHO. Andrew
