Unlike the 2.7V6 diesel in which designers had anticipated the problem...
anyone want to send in the picture of DSL's D3 so they can correct their assumption...? The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Why change the habits of a lifetime!! Cynic in me would say the design flaw is the turbos that only last 5 minutes but I'm not cynical any more.

Spot the differences from the new model and old model!!
I know the problem with the turbos is not good, but lifting the body off the chassis is not as extreme as it looks. My local Landrover specialist had one apart the other day when I was there to repair a D3 TDV6. He said that it was not as difficult as it looks as everything just unplugs. He said that round there radiator area was a little tricky but everything else was straightforward and didn't take too long.2.7 D4 eDiff, Traxide Dual battery, Safari Snorkel...Opposite Lock winch bar..extra set 17" wheels with 245/70/17 BFG KM2 MTs..Warrior winch..Long range tank.

I don't think it is a flaw either as I doubt they ever said you wouldn't have to take the body off to change it.
They did the same with the belts originally didn't they, the body had to come off and that is a normal maintenance operation.
EDIT: Everytime I read about DSL's turbo I get nervous as I am on the original one still

Found the body off job for my car a few hundred £ cheaper (unless parts are cheaper) than the first replacement, plus I managed to get lots of other stuff done while it was in that state that would have been a lot more difficult.
PS I like the old 'faulty batch' line!

What mileage did they fail at and were the replacements new or reconditioned out of interest.
I am always a bit dubious about some reconditioned parts if I am honest.

Up to 20 months old and 25k miles my motor has had an enormous amount of major part replacements under warranty, including a turbo ....I choose not to whine on about it though.

I am clutching the edge of the wooden desk like a b d as I type this , but in nearly 7 years of D3 ownership, and getting on for 200k miles, I have never had a turbo fail, and only 1 egr.

2 egrs & no turbo. I don't worry if the turbo will fail, if it does, it does.... No more or less than any other turbo related product. ind you, I do give mine a damned good thrashing on a regular basis. Just to keep the turbo vanes freed up of course....Bodsys Brake Bible

Between both my D3 and D4 I have done a mere 52,000 mile of motoring! Not had one mechanical issue whatsoever... Couple of Chrismas tree incidents on the dash (1 airbag light, 1 gearbox fault) and a cutting out glitch when terrain response was in rock crawl... But my two really have been very very dependable...... so far.
If this forum is anything to go by I will have some problem with the D4 at some point... still touchwood so far

It looks like the tires in the 2nd body off picture from the Honestjohn article are Michelin Synchrones. Not sure about UK fitment on D4's but they aren't standard tires across the pond. I saw that and thought maybe it was a D3 stock photo and John should have been honest with his pictures.16 D4 Landmark
