Funny old world....
Just had a reminder off LR to renew my extended warranty. I've been umin' and arrin' over renewing, but on the way home from sunny Manc Land, on goes the Engine Management Light....
Pulls overs and ripping out the dusty D3 manual with a death grip, started speed flicking for the offending light. Three times I flicked through, effing and blinding at the imaginary person who did the lay out of the damn book.
Found the little piccy of the light and felt even worst after reading the notes.
Phone LR assist thingy and Dave the Techie said he would come and see me in the morning, reassured me it would be fine driving home as long as it never lost power, light flashed or turned red....Otherwise stop!!!!
Arrived back at my unit and nearly broke out into a sprint to get the forum on and search for posts on this light...Now has anyone done these online medical thing and at the end of a couple of hours you think your dying....That's how I felt after reading post after post how bad this innocent looking light could be....
I'd had enough after twenty mins, locked up and putting the key in the ignition, thought please go away... Turned it over, one flicker and "poof" the light disappeared. Gave Dave the Techie a bell and he asked me what I did prior to the light coming on....
Well, going downhill towards a red light there was a car along side with a dog rough engine, I thought I hope that's not me and slipped it into neutral and blipped the gas to check my engine noise or lack of it. The lights changed and back into drive and drove on, next the light came on...
Dave reckoned I confused the conversation between engine, gearbox, suspension etc. and that made the light come on...Only engage neutral once stopped he advised...
Whadda ya all think, Is Dave winging it or I'm in for the curse of the amber light.....

No Mac, I have replicated it too not long after purchasing. I was told in the past any prolonged stop at a junction/lights its was best advised to select N, and mine did the same only once. Went to dealer and they found nothing except lecture me on the Modern Diesel and Managment Systems with an Auto
I don't do it anymore

Mac,
I've been doing this lately, well after spending £190:00 for rear pads and sensors at the MD's.
Thinking, put it in neutral and save the brakes, or not it seems...
Cheers for the reassuring reply..

Mac22, you'd be better off leaving it in D and using engine braking; you'd use less fuel and with the way fuel prices are going that saving will spring you a new set of pads each year
Not entirely convinced about the advice not to be moving when using N; it's what you do to change between hi and lo range on the move... Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

What the guy was saying is the incredibly thick "brain" in the D3 gets confused when traveling at speed and switching from D to N and back to D, that's when the light came on. With no other symptoms, well the only one was my falling out...

At the lights I often select N and only go back to D before pulling off - but with enough time to allow the box to engage properly.
I often put it into N following an ESF when moving at speed - followed by ignition off and restart and back into D. Wish I didn't have to mind you! Mark.
