| Road Tyres Pirelli or Goodyear? |
|
Having picked up a bargain set of 18" SE alloys  I need some road tyres for them. Anyone got a view on which is best between the Pirelli Scorpion Zero or the Goodyear Wrangler HP? Although they will be mainly for on-road I would like to know if either are better for occasional off-road use? 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Wrangler's seem to be pretty good both on and off road.

My first D3 had GY and the second PS, I haven't noticed any difference, I did 24K on the first set and there was plenty of wear left and 10K on this lot with no wear issues. I haven't driven the PSs off road much, but the GY were very good on Salisbury Plain and at Rockingham and Tixover as well as more general stuff when shooting. Kwikfit are still doing buy 4 get 25% off for the Pirellis, means £125 a tyre fitted if you go for 4.

you should be able to get the 18 " Scorpions from and independent dealer for between £95 - £100 each any day of the week, I bought a two a few weeks back for that much,

Loads of folks slag the Goodyear wranglers off, but I've had them in 255/55x18's on both my TD5's, and now in 255/55x19 on the D3, and have got loads of wear out of them. The D3 had scorpions on the 18" alloys when delivered, and I would say the pirellis were slightly quieter on the road.

PS - The HSE I used on my LR day had 19" Wranglers on it, and we had no problems with traction, even on wet clay. Volvo XC90 B5 Plus Dark

I am using my second set of Pirellis on 19' rims and I have to say I am quite happy with them eventhough I thought first that they would be a bit "light" for offroad. With the first set I managed to do 40000kms. Ok at the end there was almost nothing left of them and it is when I got a puncture that I finally decided it was a good time to buy new ones. I used them only onroad and they were great: making no noise and always sticking to the road. With the second set I did my first offroad experience, and believe me they were great there too, when you think that there first purpose is to stay on roads. For this offroad experience it had rained the weeks before and the tracks were very muddy. I went through mud holes with mud up to over the bonnet and the tires always pulled me out. So, I don't know the Wranglers, but I know the pirellis are good for use on road with from time to time a real offroad excursion.

I think either way, with the systems the D3 uses your going to be OK.
Just look at the prices and availability in your size following a puncture. Wrangler's seem to be harder to get for the 18" rims at local fitters.

dunno.. but the compound and tread pattern will be more valid. Deeper the tread more clag they collect.
Even MTR's become slicks in the right mud and allow you to travel absolutely no where.
My Wrangler's have taken me places that Cooper's would not... but generally the Coopers will be far better. Very terrain / driving style dependant.
From memory I think that the Wrangler's do have a slightly deeper cut but again will not be as important as compound and tread pattern

Yes, the Scorpions have less initial tread, but that doesn't mean that they will do less mileage.

I have the experience that pirellis are too soft. They wear off to quick. When I changed to winter tyres after 17.000km, I decided to liquidate them and to buy new summer tyres in spring time; the profile was not worn of completely but fitting them again in spring would mean a big safety risk and later another wheel change .
So now I drive on Wranglers and they seem to last more.

Thanks for all the advice, I have picked up a set of 4 brand new, unused Goodyears for £200 with some alloys still attached so will fit them and pop the alloys back on eBay (non D3, fit a D2 or a P38).
I also have 2 x Pirelli's that will be available to the forum, one is brand new and one has only a few hundred miles of wear. Will offer them to the forum at £50 each. Please PM if interested. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

What size are the Goodyears Andy? Unless they were oversize on the D2/P38 they're probably undersize for the D3 The End
