Equipment for Morocco Trip
This summer 3 friends and i are planning on driving down through europe and on to morocco over a few weeks this summer (end of june to 15th july), and had a few questions:
1:-I am looking for a roof rack that will carry a second spare tyre and maybe a couple of jerry cans. looking for a cheap or second hand one. any suggestions on make?
2:-Also i have 19" HSE alloys which will be on the vehicle. Will it be ok to use two 245/70 r17 BFG MT as two back up tyres? as i only have a space saver spare.
3:-As i am not going with a tour and just going to be one vehicle, are there any tours you can join that go into the desert for a few day once you get down there?
4:-Also what other equipment might i need. obviously will have tents and cooking equipment etc.
I think i'm going to get a Front Runner as I've got an Oztent so need a full length rack but I do quite like the look of this rack as a cheap alternative. Already has a spare mount and spot light mounts.

In that heat it might not be a good idea to carry fuel on the roof. If you smell diesel when driving along expansion in the jerry car could be forcing the seal.
Re spares, I assume the 4 Tyres on the car are road tyres?? Just watch eBay for a couple of spares with low(ish) tread, gotta be better than driving with different sized wheel/tyres and MUDs at that.

Probably your biggest mistake if you're intending on going off-road.... D3 fully loaded with 4 people and kit will be over 3 tons, that's a lot of weight to dig out when/if you get stuck....The End

I think you might have miss read me slightly. I am going through Europe as one vehicle but then when i get to morocco i want to meet up with or join a tour for a trip into the desert.
Also anyone got anyone advise on my question about the tyres.
BuckinghamBazza, we get our oz tent inside the D3, just put middel seat down.

Thanks but the 11 year old who normally occupies the middle seat might have a few complaints about that! If you aren't living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space!!

We have done Morocco several times including last year when we took our caravan with us.
Morocco has made terrific advances to its infrastructure over the last ten years and for most of the time you will be on good quality tarmac. When it comes to going off road in a serious manner all the towns near the Sahara will have a number of 'tour' companies offering their services to you - remember to bargain with them - they expect it.
There are plenty of camp sites around Morocco and the southern ones will be touting for your business - either in your own vehicle or with theirs, mostly these companies organise their trips with two or more cars - which is good insurance if you get stuck.
Also do a GOOGLE search for desert tours and you will find a thousand and one companies do these - BUT word of warning Summer in southern Morocco is unbearably hot with the Sahara averaging 45 degrees Celsius by day and in some parts it can get as high 70 degrees !! So always carry plenty of drinking water as well as sun protection.

Another quick question -
Is a raised air intake necessary for the desert, i understand it helps, but will i get any problems without one.

Not essential but when you're driving in the dust wake of the car in front it lifts the intake into cleaner air.
