Land Rover Rally 2006 Moab Part I: Wipeout Hill
Well we just got back from the rally in Moab. If you have never been, it is the offroad disneyland.
On day one, I pulled into the line for 7 mile rim which inclulded wipeout hill as an option. I was the only LR3, and of course, I got the usual "are you sure you want to bring that thing on this trail" stuff I get from the people with "real" land rovers. The trail leader told me to get behind this disco II so I could see where to put my tires. "Thanks" I said.
When we got to wipeout hill, I was the only one that would even try it:
When I started pulling up to the obstacle, people started making comments about how we were going to be here all day, and why would anyone take an LR3 down and back up this hill.
Of course, as I am learning more and more each time I wheel with these guys, the LR3 has all the clearance that those jacked up range rovers and discos have as long as you put your wheels in the right place and let the truck do its magic.
The real land rovers that didn't even try wipeout hill:

John, that's awesome. I was out playing around on another trail that day, and before I made it back to the meeting area, the news had filtered down through trail guides and a few other people that you made it down and back up. It really sent a ripple through the "real" Land Rover drivers. On the same day Adam Spiker made it up Hells Gate and Tip Over Challenge with his Range Rover Sport on the Hells Revenge trail. It was a shock to a lot of the die hard old breed of Rover drivers/
Guys like you and Dave Lane are definately good for the breed.
Cheers,
NW

It is true, I did have Bill Burke spotting me. He happened to show up and tag along informally with our group. When a disco II couldn't do a climb (mostly because it was stuck in high) and the LR3 crawled right up, Bill and I started doing some obstacles off to the side.
When the rest of the group went to lunch, we started doing some of these deep cracks nearby. The LR3 really made it look easy (pics to follow).
Then when no one would do wipehout hill in their real landrovers, I told Bill that I would do it if he would spot me. I knew I could do it because I had previously done it in a range rover sport.
Even after doing it with Bill there, no one else would do it.
Then the rally got even better. On the last day, we did steel bender. Again, I was the only LR3, but the group was a great bunch, and there was no "that isn't a real truck" crap I get.
No other vehicle, including the yellow D90 was able to make it up. They were all winched up (as there was no bypass), as is shown on the other pictures. And, believe me, after seeing me walk up it, they really tried.LR3 HSE
