Hi all, Just wanting some opinions on battery life. Mine is original from new , 4 years old and I am planniing atrip in September to the Flinders etc etc ,would it be wise to change it before I go ? It is showing no sign of giving up at present. What type is suitable to replace ?

Yes I'd replace it, and with a genuine LR one. I'd think about changing the alternator too, they tend to pop at the 5 year mark! 2014 D4 XS

Hi Big Kev,
It depends.
If you are travelling solo and will be out of contact with others, your schedule can't slip and haven't an auxiliary battery, then yes, battery replacement before you go would be a good idea.
I also agree that replacing it with the new 950Ah LR battery is the way to go.
While James MAY be right re alternator life, I must say that I haven't heard this.
To give some perspective, my D3 is approaching 6 year of age and am still on the original battery and alternator. (How's that for the kiss of death? )
Best Wishes,

Kev, a couple of years ago my battery died (four years onl) while we were camped at Blackall in Qld. Took four days for a replacement to arrive. When I had the car in for the next service at home I found out that the battery that was sent and installed was a LR look-a-like and not genuine. I was advised to change it as it " would not perform the necessary functions" [sic]. Now sits in the shed for other jobs.... Retired Bob

My original battery developed cracks in the casing - around the negative terminal plastic. It was weeping acid all over the terminals and towards the back of the battery.
So I got about 2 years on my first battery.

Better replace it. I've mine changed yesterday by the dealer. But my car was in not knowing it was a weak battery. I took it in because the engine stalled last week while I was driving, and the car was in crawling mode. Although I finally got it start up normal, but I noticed power was a bit weak only around 90% when normal. The dealer changed two things, the fuel filter and the battery. Now power back to normal 100%. So a weak battery can cause lots of problem on the car. The main thing is although the car has the battery warning light, however, mine was not bad enough to trigger the warning light. But it affected the car already.

I am still on the original battery - almost 6 and a half years old. I would guess ( I have no technical knowledge of these things ) that battery life is at least in part down to usage.
I do not commute by car , most of my journeys are long , and I have the base model with limited electric gizmos - no adjustable seats etc. Here's hoping I am not tempting fate !

My battery died on holiday camping , killed by an exhuberant child , who likes to play in the car , beach not enough, or swmbo doing her face in the drivers mirror , lights stay on if it's left Down , lra came to the campsite in France , twice , wondering if that has killed my battery , as it's nearly three years old ? 2008 ,hse, it does what it says .

I replaced my battery this morning with a genuine 950A LR one.
My D3 is 4 years and 8 months old.
Until this winter, my IBS dual battery system showed the main battery at around 12.4-12.6 V every morning, but after the winter this has now dropped to 11.4 V and it has started getting slower to turn over.
I also got a "special programs off" error on cranking last week so decided it was better to just change it.
I went to start it at lunch time and the IBS now displays 12.8V before cranking
For the record, I also have a CTEK XS2500 charger and have used this a few times over winter to keep it tip-top, but I think that 4-5 years is probably a fair time to think about changing the battery 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

You can use another brand if you want, but I think that for the spec and size needed the original LR battery is actually very good value compared to most aftermarket ones
There are not that many batteries around that meet the specs to be honest, although they are out there 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue
