Another award for it! Very Happy Must say, I don't own a caravan but have helped remove stranded cars in the snow, including a very heavy Mercedes S Class, in a blizzard (don't know why the owner went out in it when his wife has a freelander Mad ) My D4 managed to tow in out of a deep snow covering and up a steep hill.... with half worn Pirelli Tyres all round.... Also not helped by the fact that when I was attempting to remove the S-Class the driver wasn't helping at all, it was left in N with him sitting there just steering so the Discovery had pull the full Mercedes dead weight...

Anyone who says its not a proper Land Rover or a modern soft roader really should try one.. Its awesome... Combines work horse towing credentials of a defender with Range Rover comfort! BRILLIANT Mr. Green

In all honesty it was still by far the best vehicle on test, but it seems that a different vehicle was wanted for the "overall winner". I was there!

Like I said. The Passat won overall because it was new, and in its favour was the fact that it could tow a reasonable sized caravan/trailer without the driver needing the B+E driving licence.

It was agreed however that the D4 was still the best (and money no object winner).

Just got the Camping and Caravan Club magazine and they have a full feature on the event BUT they keep referring to the Discovery 3 even though their pictures clearly show a '10' plate Discovery 4 !!

Makes you wonder how valid these tests are if they can not even get the vehicle marque correct.

Sorry Ted, it's you who need to get things right. It is referred to as the Discovery 3.0 SDV6 XS. The 3.0 indicating the engine size, as in 3 litres. I would have been very surprised if the author had got that wrong, knowing him well. However, the vehicle used was a fully loaded HSE (very nice), not the XS which they recommend. Thumbs Up

Nigel thank you fro the 'put down' but I have the article in front of me and on page 37 it says:-

62 Land Rover

Discovery 3.0
SDV6 XS

and on page 62 it says:-

Discovery 3.0 SDV6 XS

OK so I now see they refer to a 3.0 litre engine BUT it is most confusing as the D4 only comes with a 3.0 litre engine so one expects to see:-

Discovery 4 - which is how LR list it followed by SDV6 XS (or HSE etc)

So I read and re-read the article firmly believing that it was a Discovery 3

So Nigel, if as you say you know the author, perhaps you could tell him to describe vehicles with the names, numbers etc as given by the manufacturers as well as tell us the actual model tested.

OK so in the end it got a good write up BUT it totally confused me showing a 10 plate car with a Discovery 4 grill.

I wouldn't get too hung up about what they call it... in the link above it's refered to as a "Land Rover Discovery 4 2.0 SDV6 XS" (bet the 2 litre struggles a bit with a large boat!) http://www.carpages.co.uk/land_rover/land-...-06-11.asp

Time for the marketing men to throw half the letters away and just call it a Discovery 4. Rolling Eyes

Ted,

Sorry if I caused offence, it wasn't my intention (careless choice of words) - sorry. I see where you're coming from, but the same applies to all the vehicles I suppose. The Passat is the Passat 170 etc, etc, not the MK whatever it is.

Bottom line was that the Discovery (let's leave it at that as we all know which version it is!) was still far better than ANY of the oposition (in almost all the judges eyes), despite the dreamers who own other marques. Now if I could have my faith restored in LR's reliability following the ownership of my current Discovery (3)........

Oh, and the gang aren't responsible for the 2.0 gaff!
