Just spec'ing up a 2012 car and wondered what the view is on the active diff? I am getting mixed messages on this forum, but thought I would ask a fresh collection of eyes.
So, any comments on active diff option? Might interfere with the plans for the rear seat entertainment, as they can't be ordered together.

if you are ordering from new, then I would add it (I did  ) its relativly cheap compared to the total value.
i have it on both the D3 and D4. whilst the normal diff will take a D3/4 most places, you will do it with a lot less effort than without it. in the most extreme of places then a D3/4 with a locking rear diff will stand more chance of making through than one without.
for normal road driving in ice/snow etc, a locking rear diff wont make any noticable difference.
not many D3/4s are fitted with them - spec it and join the club Duncan

I searched for ages trying to find a back to back test but could not find any however the general consensus is as per DiscoDunc reply

And the price is a bargain

go aftermarket rear entertainment (cheaper and more flexible)
so to sum up
active diff...GET IT
rear entertainment..aftermarket will do just fine It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Go for it. I got one on my D4, makes all the difference. That said it also depends on what you are going to do with it.

I agree, add it to the order. Took me ages to find a D3 with a locking rear diff. Most of the time you will not need it, but it does make it easier on very icy hills. D4 SDV6 HSE 11MY - Gone

I totally agree with Dunc, order it because unlike the RES you can't add it later through a non OEM add-on - go for it LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Thanks for the replies. Still undecided, mind you. I know it is possible to retro-fit the Rosen system, but the simplicity of the Land Rover integrated system is very appealing.
For those with the Active Diff - can you actually tell when it is engaged? Do you know if you have ever needed it? OK, I'm a farmer, but will I really need the Active Diff for regular work?
On a technical note; I am assuming the reason you cannot order both the RSE and the Active Diff is because the DVD player and the AD control unit live in the same spot?

if you go offraod regularly then yes, i would get it. you can see when it engages via the 4x4 info screen. it enagages on a variable basis ie doesnt engage 100% at once, just what is needed.
you dont feel anything noticable through the vehicle when its working, but it will put less strain on the vehcile components if you have it, and you will get out of that field full of cow  a lot quicker than without it
i would like to think that ive got out of situations that non rear locking diffs car have got stuck in and put it down partly to the locking diff Duncan

Any of you Rosen retro-fit people - do you have any control from the front of the car (like the LR version)? That's what appeals to me - complete control of the back seat children!
