Filthy windscreen - a major bug-bear

Are there any top tips for keeping the windscreen clear of dead flies? I get my D4 washed most weekends, and the resevoir is kept full of washer fluid, but it just seems to be worthless. You put the jets on, set the wipers going, but it never cleans the window properly - it just gets any "bits" off, and leaves tens of (hundreds, sometimes), of impact marks on the screen. 1 hour on the motorway at this time of year is enough to make it look a real state.

Is there a special washer fluid I should be buying?

It just seems as though the screen on a D4 is so "upright", that everything just goes splat on it...

A damp teatowel over your screen has the same effect and keeps the screen wet, it also provides you with a cloth to wipe em off with!

If you use Rainex on your windows, the flies come off much easier.

I'm pretty sure 747_JK was after a solution (literally) that would work en route rather than after the event. I'm interested in this myself since I summer in France and once I'm here its open season on the bug population. The Disco (3 or 4) sure is an efficient insect killing machine - the front end looks like something from a splatter movie after even a short trip...

I guess nothing will work properly "on the move"...what I do is take one of those hard little sponge things that are designed specifically for cleaning flies off your windscreen/paintwork and whenever you stop, give a quick squirt and clean....they work very well, even with baked on ones...

I too use Rain-X note the correct spelling as there are "Rips Off" using similar names.

Rain-X products which I use are:-
Rain Repellent
Anti-Fog
Windscreen Washer Additive
2-in-1 Glass Cleaner & Rain Repellent

a full list of products is here:-

http://www.rainx.com/Products/Default.aspx

I started with them on the rally cars, and now use them on all my cars.

It has been suggested that Rain-X destroys the rubber in standard wiper blades but has no effect on silicone blades. I haven't suffered this problem on the Discio 3 yet, although I use Rain-X silicone blades on the other cars and will fit them to the Disco when it needs new blades (soon).

Halfords & Tesco stock Rain-X products, often on special offer.

You either love Rain-X or hate it - there are those who swear at it !

Hi NJSS, thanks for the posting most interesting, I have been considering getting some Rain X for my D3.

I know you have not suffered the problem, however is there evidence that Rain X does cause problems with standard wipers ?
