Longest lasting Summer Road Tire Recommends
Hi All,
I have picked up a set of General Grabber ATs for the winter based on general discussion on these forums (thanks all - very constructive and really very helpful).
I'm now looking to find a cheap set of alloys and pop some summer road tires on there to avoid chewing through the sets of Grabbers, ready for next year. During the summer the majority of the driving is road with some light field work pulling a trailer with a couple of horses, and I'm thinking road tires should be fine for the latter too - in the dry (Famous last words perhaps - but we'll see)
I've been reading with interest the thread on long lasting tires, but people experience many different driving needs and conditions, so for my benefit and perhaps anyone else in the same situation, can anyone recommend a long lasting, good value, road tire for the summer for my Discovery 3 XS D M 07?
As an aside, I've been looking at the sticky threads on alloys that fit and those that don't and it looks like I need to find some FFRR type - avoiding if possible the RRS, so I guess it's an 18,19 or 20" ebay job.

I use ATR's all year round. Most of my mileage gets racked up on the M4 & M25, but I venture off road every weekend.
So I'd say just stick with your GG AT's all year round. Once they wear out, replace them with the superior Pirelli ATR's.
Alternatively, run the AT's during the summer and come the winter, fit winter/cold weather tyres. You might come a cropper off road with winter tyres though, as they tend to clog up with mud very quickly.

I've got GG AT's on mine ?
Mostly Tarmac with the odd venture up a country track Only dead fish go with the Flow !

"The Longest Lasting Road Tyres " are those ones not fitted to a D3/D4
On a serious note,when I bought my D3 it had a brand new set of road tyres on it,when I enquired to why because the car had only done 21k ,I was told that this is all you can expect to get out of them .I couldn't believe it as for the previous 14 years I've been using BFG A/T and getting around 40k+.

Any idea how many miles I should expect to get out of a set of ATs when rull all year with that similar kind of 5-2 road/weekend offroad mix?

She's a heavy lass with big feet and taste for expensive shoes, for sure.
So 21k is on the table.
Presumably those just replaced were similar to the Pirelli Scorpions that I've just replaced (similarly at 21ish K).

I think you should expect to see at least 40K out of them which is basically what DCM said
I've just got 37K out of a set of Pirelli Sorpion Zeros
Infact I got 83K out of a set of BFG AT's on a 90 Defender !
Ah those were the days !
Anyway good luck with said tyres !
I'm very pleased with mine they absorb the road well and compared to my very worn pirellis are also quiet.
How much did you pay by the way ?
You can get them for £125 a corner by all accounts ?Only dead fish go with the Flow !

I would be really pleased with 40k if I got that. If fact, if that's the expectation that most agree with I would definately go with the suggestion of sticking with them all year round. It's not worth getting the 2 sets as they'll take forever to recover the extra cost. Unless it's in fuel savings perhaps?
Ironically they guy who fitted them suggested they would only last 15-18k if I used them all year - but perhaps he wanted to sell me the road tires too.

You would need to be sideways round every corner and scrabbling round roundabouts to wear them down in 15K

Pirelli ATR's 40-50k miles. Maybe similar from GG AT's, time will tell. Not sure anyone here has had AT's fitted for any great distances yet.
Of course driving habits and therefore tyre wear vary wildly. I'm pretty easy on my tyres as much of my mileage is trundlingy along a motorway at just over 70mph.
P.S What tyre dealer did you use? The AT is an All Terrain tyre and designed for all round use. A jack of all trades if you like. It's not a high silica content compound as per a winter/cold weather tyre, so running them in the summer isn't a concern.

I just replaced 2 on the rear and went for Michelin Latitudes. Reviews say they last a lot on longer than other brands on heavier 4x4's. Not cheap at £200 each for the D3 rated ones but impressed so far. Have AT's for off road. Apparently the Latitudes are good in winter too but utterly useless off road.
I reckon the biggest factor in tyre life is wheel alignment - so many people have to replace tyres prematurely as one part is heavily worn but the rest is fine. Get it done regularly. As suspension parts wear it goes off. Had mine done and it was miles out (see my gallery) which isn't good for the tyres.Tony

Just from the title I was going to suggest GG AT's. They seem to have very little effect on fuel consumption or noise, so no need to change - they really are "AT"
Mine have now done about 5k and still look as new. (and that includes about 2.5k fully laden to Morocco and back.Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

General AT very good tyres.
Pirelli ATR very good tyres, I was forced into saying that.
27,000 miles so far on ATRs and still have 7mm across all four. I would expect similar from Grabber ATs

I replaced my previous tyres with a set of GG AT's last December and I've done about 14'000 on them so far with plenty of grip in all weathers and conditions, very little signs of wear as yet. Clive
