HIGHWAYS TRAFFIC OFFICER DISCO 3 BREAKDOWN

Spotted liveried Disco 3 on M62 today 33-34 west bound broken down
Three traffic officers sat on boundry fence like three wise monkies.

The Disco is the least popoular of their fleet because of regular breakdowns. The Nissan Path finder and Toyotas seem to be first choice out of the depot

Shame, I suppose it would be the one thats based at Hartshead Moor services? think its an 05 reg. I would be interested to hear what the common breakdowns are.

These guys must clock up some miles, and I would like to hear what the fuel consumption is, as they seem to always cruise very sedately. I reckon the HA must have some pretty good comparison data between the 4x4 manufacturers.

It was down that neck of the woods that I saw the Highway guys in a Range Rover - Too much tax for toys I say. If they need a 4x4 five them a 110.

I personally think its great that our police and the HA/VOSA use Range Rovers and D3's. If there good enough for them, they are good enough for me.

Well you are paying for them!

I imaginge there is some poor sod working his nuts off, driving a Freelander, aspiring for a D3, but has to finish paying for the HA's first before he gets his own.

I think it is fit for purpose, the FFRRs and D3s have to be able to move vehicles be out in all weathers and carry huge loads such as cones etc a Freelander would not be big enough. I don't think they use vogue SEs either - do they? Shocked

I am a Highways Agency Traffic Officer therefore I am also a Civil Servant and for that reason I will not reveal which part of the UK I work. The reason being data protection amongst many other things. Rolling Eyes

I drive a Disco 3 whilst on duty - yes we have had some problems with them but with age and miles they appear to be getting more reliable. Pity the crews in the South West where I hear a Nissan Pathfinder has been at a dealers for over 2 months with a fault. A new fuel pump and new turbo fitted and the fault still exists......... Banging Head

Hand brake faults and tyre wear are the current problem areas. Yet to hear of anyone suffering with engine or transmission problems.

So fire some questions at me........i will try to answer them. Our vehicles have all covered well in excess of 60,000 miles each Idea

Hi Motorway man, good to have you on here. Maybe I saw you this morning on the M6 south, I saw a HA D3 just past J15.

I think of all the various vehicles that you use the D3 is by far the best looking, and does indeed have a very commanding road presence, especially liveried up in HA colours.

Personally, I think that all the stick you guys sometimes get for apparently doing nothing but cruising in flash 4x4 is very misguided, You do a great job assisting at incidents, and keeping things under control when things go wrong. I have been stuck on a hard shoulder in the past (Not in a Land Rover) and it was a very scary place to be! I wish a HA D3 had been around back then to keep me safe. Thumbs Up

I'll second that Gareth - who would want to spend all day on a Motorway, clearing up the shunts and helping people change flat tyres on the hard shoulder. IMO the Highway Agency guys deserve a nice vehicle and decent danger money!
