Great news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spoke to Dragon Engines they have finally taken the body off and exposed the cause...
Big end had indeed gone!! works start Monday replacing the engine with a reconditioned lump with a year guarantee...
Its taken two weeks to get their finger out, this may be due to the fact that its holiday season and Dragon struggled to get the thing inspected by WD but apparently it should be ready on Friday the 19th August 2011
They have also offered to replace the clutch at the same time as the bodies off, how much would be acceptable to pay to have this done?
My son is due to be born on Friday the 26th so hopefully things ar looking up!!!!!! woooo
Spent tooo much club: Air compresser, parking ecu,D4 front D4 rear, tow bar, D4 arches, stormers 20" with General grabbers, new engine, new turbo, new front lower arms, new rear upper arms, new track rod ends, new anti roll bar bushes, Bas remap 2nd stage, K&N filter, clear indicators, door handle covers, nav update, wheel protector, new winch for spare wheel, 20" stormer spare, new plastic tube on top of engine, new fuel flap assembly, new mats, sill protectors,

No question you must do the clutch when you have the engine ou & body off.
Despite the mileage in view of the age of your car I would also give serious consideration to doing the belt part of the 105k mile/7 year service - belts + tensioners etc...
It would be prudent & save some £100s in labour + give you peace of mind in this respect.

You need to check what they re doing with ancillaries - I think the belts & tensioners should be new but...?

The clutch is expensive, just to buy all the parts I think it comes in at close on 6 or 7 hundred, but a simple job at this time. I also had the brake pipes done, see other threads about doing them without the body lifted. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Would be madness to not replace the clutch. IIRC, its around £250-£300 if you dont need a flywheel, and as Dave T says, nearly £700 if it does need replaced
I would replace the brake pipes regardless, when the body was off. Will save you a lot of money in the long run if you are planning on keeping the car.
If it is a recon engine going in, I would check whether it is just a short block, or comes with heads etc already bolted on. If it is the latter, there will be a new cam belt already fitted. I would hope that if they have to swap the heads onto a new block, they would put a new belt on too...
HPFP belt tensioner is a one shot tensioner, cant be reused, and comes in a kit with a new belt anyway.
Only other belt is the aux. drive belt. It will be off anyway, so will only be cost of parts. If they dont change it, its not difficult to change yourself
Would be wise to check the bearings/pulleys of everything else, Alternator, AC pump, water pump etc.
Check the top of the tank, make sure it hasnt been attacked by mice
Check the air dryer assy, and pipes. If it has had the A034/A036 enhancement upgrades, the replacement wiring loom for the EPB chaffes on the pipes, allowing moisture/dirt into the air compressor
Will also give you a chance to inspect the wiring loom for any damage/corrosion, and rectify any defects while its nice and easy to access it all
Oh, and good luck with the new baby. Get as much sleep as you can now My D3 Build Thread

22/08/11 A HAMSTER have said that they need a second opinion on the engine now its been stripped down, this should have happend ages ago why now, they have had the car for a month now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also ive been hiring a car as i need one, they say that they will pay for the hire car once the work has been autherised, im already out of pocket to the tune of around 1k in hire charges!!
I think the problem is:
ANOTHER HAMSTER recieved the car and took the sump off showed that the big end have gone reported to A HAMSTER
Then they send a man down... on his little report he sid that the engine failiure was not conclusive at the inspection and that further stripping is required. which means lifting the body off, dragon then needed to get autherisation for that which seems to have taken time so now another little man is gonig to go tomorrow to have another look now the cars in bits........................
I feel that that it is unreasonable to expect me to pick up the tab for then dicking around!! ill update tomorrow, not impressed...

Dan
I would go through your policy document and read all the small print very carefully. When mine was in, WW didn't even get the report from the engineer for 8 days (before rejecting my claim) but the policy said it would only pay for a hire car for 5 days! Luckily we have a defender that is roadworthy so I only had a few days car hire to pay for for a specific event.
However, they did refund the car hire because of the delay they had caused which made me need to hire the car (even after rejecting the claim), so make sure you know the dates of when the car was there ready to be inspected, when they inspected it and got the report and any other delays that were caused by waiting for them and if you were just paying when would work have been complete. You then need to find a way past the claims department!
Good luck
PM me if you want to ask anything else.

There not gonna pay!
Because under the 90 day clause the bearing had suffered wear and tear within the first 60 days!
What is the point of having a Warranty?
I am gonna get an independant engine dude out now
