2007 leak on steering rack
Hi this is my first post hope someone can help me out here.
just had a service carried out on my disco 3 xs 45,000 miles 2007 in superb condition.
Always had it serviced by main dealers this time my service cost £483 including mot which it failed.
One of the things was a leak on the steering rack main dealer said i need it replacing at a cost of £780
are these not meant too last longer than 45,000 miles tries getting landrover to cover the costs under goodwill but they said the vehicle is too old.....
What can i do, does the rack need replacing or could it be just a seal......
ooh you got stung,@ service they said ,oh sir you need 4 tyres,' 220 per tyre, oh no i said ,no thank you ,got them myself ,no where near that price,
,steering ,i dont know about., many more peeps with the knowledge, will be along soon 2008 ,hse, it does what it says .

Firstly, hi and welcome to the site.
It depends how bad the leak is, if it's dripping from below and the Power steering fluid needs topping up periodically, then I'd say it's quite possible the rack is fubar'ed.
On the other hand, I think it's normal for a small amount of fluid to migrate through the rack mechanicals and get into the gaiter, if there's just a bit of wetness around it, maybe the gaiter is damaged or nicked on the underneath and simply needs replacing,Clive

Hi.
There are seals that can be replaced but these are external on the pas pipes so this is unlikely to be the problem seeing as they are telling you the rack needs replacing. As someone else as suggested you can get a small amount in the rack gaiters but it depends on how much is coming out.
Im assuming that you had the steering tie rods done at the MOT and they noticed it when they took the gaiters off?
Just be aware though that the cost thats been quoted is probably for the alignment so it might not be as bad as you think.

I've had a rack changed on my 09 at 30k miles as it was leaking, and one on my old D3 at approx 40k.
LR do both a new and a refurb rack, and there are at lest two different model of rack use (an dampened and undampened version)
Give TLO on here a call/PM with your chassis number and he'll tell you which one you need.
