No Drive

Can anyone help with this issue. Driving along with no sign of a problem. Suddenly the car looses all drive, the engine is working normally, nothing comes up on the dash. From stop the car wants to move, anything up hill and car will not move. On the flat it tries to move, sometimes move a few feet, other times will not move at all. Have tried high and low range, forward, reverse, no go. My Landrover dealer in Melbourne has had the car for 4 weeks and cannot find the problem. Have tried a new gearbox - worked for 2 km then same problem, cannot find any issues with the transfer case or ECU.
Has anyone heard of a problem like this, if so I would love to hear about it, as Landrover have no idea.

Gear lever not engaging properly? I think there has been some issues with the connectors before?

Did they check the spline on the box and socket for it on the transfer case?

This has been shown to have no lube and has worn giving a drivetrain clunk
Did yours clunk before the box was changed?

Hope changing the gear box was not a waste.

Have they checked the obvious - a CV joint or CV retaining clip?

Cheers,

This rings the usual danger alarms about the lack of knowledge of dealers and their propensity to not diagnose problems but to simply replace things at owners expense until the problem is fixed. I hope you have refused to pay for the gearbox.

While I have had no problems with my car to date I must admit I am beginning to wish I had bought something else. Of the other 3 people I personally know with D3s all three have just spent huge dollars on gearboxes, transfer cases, egr valves and other things - and on vehicles with only moderate kms.

The gear lever is working fine, or so it feels and appears on the dash to show which gear you are in. When the car lost drive there was no noise, suddenly no drive.
If it was a CV joint wouldn't there still be drive on the other axle?
So far I have not paid any money. I was quoted $8500 to replace the gearbox, as this is where they originally diagnosed the problem to be. So far it appears that there was nothing wrong with my original gearbox. Now the dealer has taken the new replacement gearbox out and sent it away for testing to make sure it is OK. My thoughts are that the ECU should need a serious look over. The dealer has said that they do not replace the ECU unless there is an obvious problem as LR in their wisdom have designed them so that when they are fitted into a car they cannot be reused by any other car and they are not cheap. So to try a new ECU ca be a very expensive episode.
I am amazed that, according to my dealer, no other car has had a problem like this.
Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As Carver mentioned - when the box was out did they check the splines that join the box and the transfer case?

As I indicated above - repair by replacement at owners expense until they fix the problem seems to be norm these day.

Hi Maddison,
To answer your question - I certainly haven't heard of this before.

(I know that it's a typical dealer response, but I'm not a dealer).

I hope that you get it sorted shortly.

Best Wishes,
Peter

No, the car will drive in fits and starts, and only really make progress in low-range rock-crawl.

Gordon

The news as of today. The dealer has fitted a new ECU today and as soon as the engine is started it comes up with a sensor error in the transfer case. It says the transfer case is over heating and it is shutting down the drive. Hopefully this is the end of the problem. Will advise the outcome.

keep us posted, very keen to see what develops as I too have had the same issues on two occassions after a hard days towing (around 400 + miles). This is 3 months after a new box was fitted and 4 months after a new transfer box.

I hasten to add, the dealership originally advised that the old box needed changing due to the same symptoms Shocked

update for yer guys re our auto box, slipped between 3rd to 4th last week then 12 miles later as we pulled in to the auction house with a loaded car transporter, up came transmission fault and "F" on the gearbox selector followed by only driving in third. Let him go to sleep for 10 minutes and re-started... no issues.

Next day after another 170 miles up comes "transmission fault" followed by HDC special programmes not available" and then "suspension lowered". Pulled off to the side of the motorway for 10 mins, then re-start and off we go for another 53 miles to our LR dealer. Stuck him on IDS, worked out the fault codes and the related mileage for the previous events, TURNS OUT TO BE THE BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Nicked one off a sales car on the ramp (it was after 6.00pm on a thursday), then cleared all the faults and another 275 miles then next days all is well (including pulling a 3500KG Vauxhall van on the trailer up a 16% hill Whistle Shocked ).

So no gear slippage since, no error messages since (fingers crossed) Thumbs Up

Sorry guys for no updates, but there is not much change. I still do not have a driveable disco. We have had live diagnostics links to UK that as I understand have not really helped. The current diagnosis is that it is partly to do with the electronic park brake and an associated sensor. But this is not definite, but they say they are close to finding the problem. When they do find the cure I will advise the outcome.
