OMG... it's like Groundhog Day...

Early Jan 2010.... I get an invitation to an event at Gaydon to experience the 'new D4'

February... I start the charm offensive with my FD (bearing in mind we had a 'no 4x4' car policy) to get approval and buy-in - this was for a vehicle that was due for change in November...

Try to order vehicle in June... ah, spec change due (to 2011MY) and no-one can tell me the whole story about price and spec... I could get some information from one dealer, fill in the gaps with another and so on...

All information 'embargo'ed' until 18th July - whereupon all the leasing companies went on hols and couldn't release prices for the new model.

Ordered vehicle in early August...

Told today that delivery date has now been advised as 8th Feb (being brought forward from 23rd Feb...)

Excuse my excitement!!!!

Having experienced this rollercoaster, I don't think that I would wait on the 2012MY but simply get any order into the system (presuming that this is the basis of your question) and see what you get!

Good luck... sure it will be worth it in the end!
 D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY

D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)

Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

It is possible to get a 2012MY. Shocked
Ok, you need to be as lucky as me:

I ordered a 2010MY in March 2010 for a delivery in June/July.
After a "small" production delay it arrives in September. Thus a 2011MY.
But with the wrong color...
Ordered another one a couple of weeks later for a delivery end of January 2011.
Finally to be told last week, there is a "small" production delay.
Should get it end of March!

As you can see there is hope, even if you order it now Very Happy

realistically, what do you think the chances are LR will introduce stop/start to the discovery range? They have already done it on the Freelander - and with the price of diesel getting a bit out of control it would help.

I don't think it'll happen for 2012, but you never know.

You have to remember that the stop/start of the FL2 TD4_e is only for the manual gearbox models, and nearly all of the D4s now in production (with the 3.0 TDV6 in either of the two power outputs) are all automatics.

I can't see them investing too much in getting this technology to work for the small number of 2.7 TDV6 manual models that they will sell

Thumbs Up

I would imagine that it will come at some point. It would be interesting to see if Jaguar roll it out on their 3.0 SD version but I would agree with the above poster that it could be the transmission that is the key to whether or not it could be implemented and autoboxes in general have been a problem until recently.

ISTR that you can get Stop/Start on larger engined BMW autos though these days...

It's good technology in theory but I think it's more about trying to knock a few grammes of CO2 off the official consumption figures rather than delivering any meaningfull real world economy. The priority here should be shedding a few hundred kgs!

For example, the Stop/Start can be overridden if it needs power/heat from the engine to acheive/maintan the desired climate settings. Perhaps the FBH might be called upon to assist here? Is it possible that the FBH fuel consumption is irrelevant to the official mpg? Presumably, the tests are conducted at more normal ambient temperatures when the FBH is not operating??

bear in mind the new VW Toureg has stop start - and that has an 8 speed auto box on it.

Stop/start would need the ZF HP8 8-speed gearbox (which is defniitely in the 2011 Range Rover and which ZF claims to be 11% more efficient). When will this be in the D4?

With that gearbox, the stop-start option uses a "hydraulic impulse storage unit", basically a cylinder with a spring-loaded piston that acts as a reservoir to store tranmission fluid under pressure. When the engine re-starts, the oil is released back into the transmission very quickly so the transmission can provide drive right away, otherwise there would be nearly a second's hesitation.

For stop/start to work well might need upgrades to the starter/battery/alternator, an electric water pump and bearing in mind the climate extremes a disco should work in, electric A/C and heating using the fbh as well. I guess the decision depends on how much difference it would make to the urban cycle CO2 numbers for Land Rover...

The 8-speed gearbox will have more impact on fuel consumption and is much more straightforward to do. I can only see it would be delayed to give the Range Rover more attention as technology flagship?

More interested in whether the new 4.4 TDV8 fits in the Discovery engine bay, and if it would be offered in the UK if it did Wink
