hi

according to tirerack.com tyres are ranked as follow (size: 255/60/18)

1. Pirelli Scorpion ATR - Pricey but highly rated
2. General Grabber AT2 (off market but I had 4 fitted about 2-3months ago). A bit noisier than the Bridgestone Dueller Sport I had on before but those were high speed tyres, but very capable offroad and on gravel roads. Competitively priced - similar price to the Yokos and not much more expensive than BFGs, if any difference.

Other options:

1. BF Goodrich AT 265/65/18 (a bit too big to go into sparewheel carrier and thus having to carry it flat)
2. Firestone 265/60/18 - not too well known
3. Yokohama Geolander GO12 265/60/18

Of the above the BFG and Firestone does not comply with the prescribed speed rating (H/V), but is "S" - it could cause problems with insurance company

All the above are AT tyres

anybody got any advise on the comparison between BFG's and Bridgestone cause there are no BFG's in stock, arriving 4 to 6 weeks and I leave for Botswana 4 weeks from now. Bridgestone D694's are available but I'm concerned about two ply sidewall compared to three.

If you are looking for one tyre that will do high speed tar, wet twisty tar, mud, rocks and sand, you will be disappointed. It doesn't exist.

The ultimate is to have 2 sets of wheels, one with MTR/BFG/STT (still love STT for the 3-ply sidewall though they are crap in mud!) and one with performance road tyres. Takes me 20 minutes to swop a set in my own garage. Quicker than loading them up and driving across the road to the speedy.
From time to time sets of wheels come up for sale cheep cheep. (bought a set of 5 19" genuine D3 wheels with 90% new MTR's and TPMS sensors for less than the cost of the tyres) they are the wrong offset for the RR by some 10mm but they work great, and they will fit the wife's RRS too.
I have a spare set (5) of 6-spoke D3 19" fitted with worn Wranglers if you would like to make an offer. Not really a keen seller, but "need" a new Glock Smile. Could work for you if you can get a 19" Offroad tyre that you can live with. I hear MTR are rare nowadays.

These are oversize, you need to have the spare with no pressure in it to fit it in the spare wheel well but it does fit!

Thanks Baben but I'm not keen to run two sets.
I have used BFG full time for the last few years on my previous Disco's and Defenders and had no problems just there is no stock available now and someone suggested Bridgestone which I'm a bit weary of. Looks like there might be some coming in in two weeks though. Still haven't found anyone in kzn who can do the nav unlocking etc.

Also have a look at the Maxxis 762 Bighorns. I have a set fitted to my D3. Although they are muds they have better roadholding on wet roads than most offroad tires I had fitted Offroad traction is awsome, they are even better that the standard Wranglers (Roadholding wise). I have done about 70 000km on the current set and will be looking into new tires in the next 30 000km - 40 000km.
