tyre rotation & jacking points
Hi ll,
i have a question about rotating tyres & tyre wear in general. I replaced 4 tyres 5k miles ago and think maybe they might bnefit from a rotation.
is it ok to rotate tyres on a D3 and in which order should they be rotated?
when the tyres were being replaced i noticed that the offside rear tyre was badly damaged with a wire coming through even though it only had about 15k worked up. the alignment had been check by an independant operator a couple of months before that so i was suprised to see the damage to the tyre (Goodyear Wrangler 18"). At the last service the lr dealer mentioned that the tie rod ends will need replacing at the next service. Just wonderin if this could affect wear on the rear tyres?
After the new tyres were fitted the steering wheel is now off centre, is this to do with the tie rod ends?? tyre pressures are even.
Finally when i began jacking rom the neasiode rear i heard a noise as if the air suspension was releasing the air in the system. i then recalled hearing stories about people using an incorrect jacking pont and damaging the air compressor. i stopped what i was doing immediately due to worrying about causing damage. Are there any decent diagrams indicating the correct jacking point in the vicinity of the compressor as the diagram in the manual is very hard to interpret?
As always i appreciate any advice ye can give,
Cheers Lloyd

The jacking point is the big box chassis rail that runs up and down the length of the car. The rail has a locating hole near each wheel for the original jack. With a proper trolley jack you can use a point near or at this hole to lift up a corner, or use the middle of the rail to jack up both wheels on one side.
Alternatively there is a recess on the engine under-tray to jack up both front wheels at the same time (very easy to use with a rubber jack pad) and a similar place at the rear just in front of the spare wheel heat shield (although that is not easy to use with a regular floor jack).
I'll put some instructions in my gallery for you.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

As soon as I start jacking the car the suspension does something as if it is pushing down onto the jack and attempting to level the vehicle, so if you've heard the suspension 'waking up' then perhaps its that. Even my 3 tonne jack then struggles to lift the car, especially at the rear.
The air compressor is in the front of the nearside rear wheel under a plastic housing so you'll see if you have jacked it at the wrong point.

leave a door open when jacking and the suspension wont level as much.
if you are just doing a quick trye change, jack off the wishbones with a troller jack - it only need to be jacked a couple of inches and a lot safer than jacking 2 feet up off the chassis.
Not advised if you are leaving the car jacked up for any lenght of time though.Duncan

Ok, a picture paints a thousand words - in PDF form:
A good jack and axel stands are a good investment too.
what model and where did you get the jack from?
was the pin included?

As far as rotation goes.....I just got my alignment done and the Indy recommended it be done every service. If I remember rightly I think the pdf for servicing schedules lists it too, on a same-axle basis."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
