Melbourne day trip - Sat 21 October 2006 - Mt Disappointment |
|
Hi all,
First chance I'm getting to try the D3 off-road - planning a day trip in the Mt Disappointment or Tallarook State Forest area just north of Melbourne.
I'll be going out with some D2 mates (mostly modified vehicles), and maybe a Prado or 2, so will be intersting to see how the stock D3 goes.
ANyone want to join us?
cheers,
Simon D3 - Buckingham Blue, SE, TDV6, 06 model; chipped; underbody armour; Mickey Thompson ATZ 275/65-18 AND MAXXIS Bighorn muddies; rear wheel carrier from 4x4intelligence.com; iPOD aux connection! Simon,
I'd like to come but Sunday is my only day free.
I hear there is some pretty nasty stuff in Mt Dissappointment.
Enjoy.

Chris - hopefully we can get out together one day - I'll go for a Sunday next time... (I'm assuming that Sunday's are generally better for you?).
cheers,

Simon,
Generally Sunday's are better for me particular during the School year with kids.
Next time I'll see if I can get the other 2 D3 owners along that I know. Both are MLR customers.
Thanks,

Thanks for that gallery reference Lawrance. and here's a trip report of sorts... - I'll put more pics up when I get them!
Yes - it did happen... a trip with Will, Franz and Sandra, Angus
and Tanya, Phil T (with 1 daughter).
The Arch clan was agin late for their own show But, at least
we did get out there - in spite of preparing the house for an "open"
as we're selling/auction next weekend... (C'mon Chuck - what was
your excuse?) and in spite of Carly being very uncertain about
taking her new pride and joy into the bush. She's not concerned
about it going off road - so long as the scratchy bushes have been
cleared from the sides of the tracks
And, it was a great (half day)... met for late lunch at Flowerdale
pub - Will had taken a contingent up from his place, and Franz (with
Sandra in tow) accompanied us from Templestowe after he'd more than
earned his stripes by showing up early to fit the new cargo barrier
to the D3. With the "open" on, we couldn't leave the dogs at home,
so they had to come - but not without a barrier...
Headed off via STrath Creek to Horan's Track - remembering it from
the first big d2au (Melbourne) trip about 4 years ago - amazing
views as you drive into the Tallarook State Forest. Then, Rocky
Track - nervously airing down the D3 - worrying about the road
tyres - (sadly) grateful that it hadn't rained for the slicks! -
worrying about what Carly would say/do if it got damaged... and off
we went. The D3 simply ambled up Rocky Track - so easy... forgot
initially to set th car to "rock crawling" - so did that too - even
easier - where has the challenge gone?
Then a photo opp on top of Mt Hickey, and down Mountain Track, which
has a couple of steeper rockier sections - a bit more nervousness -
but no dramas. Angus noting that he felt like he was bouncing
around way more in his D2 than it "looked" like we were...
From there - we figured we just drive up the reservior via Reservior
Tk, but all the gates are still closed They close a lot of
tracks in the state forest there for the winter - I guess they
didn't know it wasn't going to rain! We eventually wound our way
into the reservoir, Phil had to leave us, heading stratight down to
the main road, only to find a huge tree down, and he to come back up.
The rest of started to head around to Steep Track - the first D3 to
conquer? But no, time was not on our side, so out we came to Strath
Ck pub - or atl least the park opposite for a beer at the D3 pub!
Thanks all for sharing our first day out. I've got to go and start
buffing scratches out
cheers,
Simon

Ahhh, memories! Way back in the days of Series 2 and (Dirty words following ) International Scouts, the Strath Creek pub was known as 'The Poisoned Waterhole'. Ex Defender 110 200Tdi owner.
